All I see on my facebook feed is "the world has gone to hell" 100 times per day.
That has made me continue a few happy posts, like this one which is the truth about where we are as a Nation. While it is hard to believe from watching the 24 hour cycle of news and reading everything on the Internet, crime rates are actually at their lowest since 1963.
I may not seem this way but it is actually safer to be a kid today. I personally believe it is because of technology, although you have nothing to back it up. When I was a kid, if you were kidnapped and your friends saw it, they had to find a house where someone was home, dial the operator on a rotary phone and ask for the police. Literally hours could pass before anyone did anything. Today, it is likely one of the kids will have a cell phone, take a picture of the car and the kidnapper, call the police and have it posted for millions to see on social media inside 1 minute. The statistics back me up, physical assault on kids ages 2-17 is down 33% in the past 10 years. Rape and attempted rates of kids in the same group are down 43%.
All crimes have dropped off as well. Homicide is down 40%, forcible rape is down 28%, violent crime is down 48% and last year the entire crime rate in the US was down another 4.4% compared to 2016.
IF you have read my other recent articles, I am re-reading the compound effect by Darren Hardy. He talks about the fact that if you constantly hear bad statistics, they compound and you believe them. The fact is the world is a much better place it is just ugly news sells better than good news. If you think about today since we were kids, the biggest change is to advertising. Advertising has never been tougher, today rather than 3 Video TV News outlets, there are literally hundreds dedicated to video news. They all have to find a story more horrific than the other to make you tune in. I have recently made the choice to limit my "news" intake and I must say, I am a lot happier for it.
