E-E-Easing into ADUs:
Engage! Educate! Empower!
Whether you call them granny flats, second units, in-law suites, or carriage houses, Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are a promising pathway toward meeting San Diego County's housing and livability goals. Register today to learn about recent state legislation that gives California cities more flexibility and latitude for allowing homeowners to build ADUs: SB 1069 (Wieckowski), AB 2299 (Bloom), AB 2406 (Thurmond), SB 229 (Wieckowski), and AB 494 (Bloom). The last two are awaiting the governor's signature.
The Program
Speakers will include California State Senator Bob Wieckowski (Alameda & Santa Clara Counties), author of landmark reform bill SB1069, and Greg Nickless, Housing Policy Analyst, California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD). Both men have spoken at ADU forums and conferences around California on SB 1069 and the need for local governments to work with homeowners rather than imposing more restrictions.Time will also be allotted for status updates from the County of San Diego and local cities on their progress toward implementing the new ADU laws, followed by a Q&A session with the speakers.
Senator Wieckowski will discuss how his bill and related legislation eliminate unnecessary barriers to the development of ADUs, empowering homeowners while addressing the California's housing crisis. The passage of SB 1069, which went into effect on January 1, 2017, substantially increased applications for ADUs in cities across the state. As a strong advocate for ADUs, Senator Wieckowski is working with HCD to identify remaining issues hindering development.
HCD's Greg Nickless will next address the myths and misconceptions of ADUs. He will also provide practical advice for implementing the new ADU laws at the local level and discuss how HCD can provide technical assistance to local agencies.
Registration check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. and the program is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. to noon.sec
