View of Lava Falling into the Ocean in Hawaii

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

Sometimes, you're just in the right place at the right time. And if you're like Josh Amolsch, exclusive buyer's agent for the Elizabeth Weintraub Team, you worked hard for that privilege. He is staying at my house in Kona on vacation right now.

A little background: there are 5 volcanoes on Big Island of Hawaii, but only three of them are active. The 5 volcancoes are Kohala (extinct), Mauna Kea (dormant), Hualalai (active), Mauna Loa (active) and Kilauea (active). Most of the lava flow into the ocean comes through cones near Kilauea. There is another volcano 15 miles off the island, under the water.

Josh shot this photo after an 8-mile bike ride, which is super strenguous given the terrain. You can read more in my personal blog today and see more photographs of lava at this link: Lava Flow Into the Ocean on Big Island.

Hi Elizabeth - Great shot. I was able to go to the mouth of  theonly active Volcanoe in HI in 1972. It was like sticking your head in a 500º oven. You could only look for about 3-4 seconds before pulling back and looking again.

The sight of lava pouring into the ocean is an amazing one. No one had prepared me for the smell, though; the sulfur smell can be quite strong -- one knows the earth is alive. One of the greatest things to see.

Lottie Kendall I haven't had the problem of sulfur on Big Island but it did affect me when we drove up to the crater on Maui. I got so sick I had to get back in the car and leave.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® Ah, the good ol' days, when you could ride a bike without a helmet and cross in the middle of the street. Nowadays, they don't let you within a half mile of the volcano.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel My team is like family to me. We are not just co-workers or associates. We share a shared vision, mission and goals. It was really hard to find authentic people like that, but I finally lucked out. I love each of them individually and as a group, and they are welcome to anything I own. Except maybe my last bottle of Kistler.

How wonderful of you to share your Kona home with your team, Elizabeth!

As for the bike ride - fabulous scenery/shots but, like you, I prefer the helicopter tour!

I hope nobody in your helicopter got sick, LOL. When we landed, my husband grabbed this white bag, and I asked, "what's that?" I didn't even notice his discreet retching. I was hanging out the door shooting photos.

My parents lived in Hilo in the late 1980s and 1990s. I was there once and got a photo of an eruption somewhere near Kalapana (I think that's where it was).  My mom said a lady who lived there said, in a "so what, big deal" manner, "oh yeah, the volcano is erupting again."

The earth continues to grow!

My favorite Hawaiian island, Elizabeth. I also remember walking right up to the lip of the crater back in the 70s and down into the bubbling lava. Nowadays they won't let you anywhere near it.

I also climbed Ayers Rock in Australia three times and now you can't do that any more either. People kept falling off the mountain just like they probably wanted to stop human sacrifices into the volcano.

Nina Hollander Well, you know, I've invited Hella M. Rothwell, Broker/Realtor® to come on by this winter as I'll be at the house for a couple months. Doesn't look  like Hella wants to go back to Lanai, because she's already seen it once, LOL.

Well, I am also the gal who was never going to drive a Lexus, and look at me now! Let's see what happens. But to set the record straight, I've been to Lanai a few times, but years ago. Once to go horseback riding (what a hoot that was) and the other times scuba diving off boats around the coast. PS. I do have my ticket to Honolulu. I'll see you somewhere there.

Kathleen Daniels It's a house, not a condo. Although it is in an HOA, but it is not gated. All the houses look pretty much the same. Depending on elevation and view and upgrades, prices are all over the board, tho. Only a mile to Ali'i Drive.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents ~ I'll keep it in mind, Elizabeth. Still trying to decide if I want to make a trek out to South Africa early in 2018 to see one of my oldest friends. If I do that, two big trips might be too much for me... too bad Hawaii is not on the way to South Africa.

I was there in 2003 when you were allowed to walk out onto hot lava beds (unbelieveable). I have photos (somewhere) of hot lava flowing beneath us, as seen through cracks. The visitors center was still there back then too.

Hi Elizabeth

What a great photo. I haven't visited the big island yet, but it's on the list! Maui is coming up in 2018!
