Air Conditioning in Laramie, WY

By

People from out of town ask the darndest things!  Fan Man

The #1 question that always makes me smile...

"Does that home have air conditioning?"

Air conditioning?!  In Laramie?  Ha ha ha ha ... you are kidding, ....right?!?

Oh, you're not?!  Yes, there are a
few homes in town with actual, whole-house air conditioning and many businesses have air conditioning, too.  However, when it comes to our own houses, most people get by with fans and open windows.  Though, I do have to admit in the last few years, we are seeing more and more homes in town with air conditioning.

We have been able to get by all these years because the hot, hot days of summer last only 4 to 6  weeks. And even then, these hot, hot temperatures rarely make it out of the 80 degree range.

Then, just about when we think we couldn't possibly stand the unbearable summer heat any longer, a cool front blows in and the heat is gone.

Thus, when it comes to air conditioning in Laramie, it's just doesn't pay to install and maintain a commodity that would be used for only one month a year.

Chart                   http://www.climate-charts.com/USA-Stations/WY/WY485435.php

On the middle chart, Cooling and Heating Degree Days, the lines show how much a home's HVAC will have to work to keep the house comfortable throughout the year.  Do you see how hard the air conditioner (blue line) will have to work?

It's okay if you ask about air conditioning though, because even if the answer is "No", it still gives me a chance to SMILE!

I guess it does have air conditioning, but it's natural.

Weather patterns are so weird right now, we've been having hotter summers and cold winters. I can imagine it would be a very short spell when you might want the AC on in Laramie. Wonder if you're experiencing atypical weather too?

It does seem like we are having hotter summers and warmer winters than usual.... but I suppose in the history of things, that would only account for the last 10 of 10,000 years!  So really its hard to know...

Hi Brenda.  This is equivalent to buyers asking about heating systems here in Florida.

There is so much stuff in the air in my area that I cannot even sleep with a window open without getting sick. Your mountain air must be much purer.

Brenda Whitman, Live in Laramie Real Estate - Your post reminded me of when I relocated from Illinois to TX. All the properties in TX had HVAC's and I was surprised. At the time, I couldn't imagine why? Now I know.

Now, if I moved to WY, I wouldn't expect AC. However, I'd sure want to know it had a good running furnance!

Interesting. I never thought about the needs for air conditioning in your area.

Brenda, this is excellent information to know if relocating to Laramie.  I never had A/C before I bought this house 16 years ago.   It has steadily gotten hotter and the need for A/C has increased.

Hi Brenda, I guess it would all depend where someone may be moving from. It must be nice to be able to just open the windows in the summer, ours have to stay pretty much closed during the hot summer months.
