Having been a Realtor for over twenty-four plus years, I have learned early in my Real Estate career, that the most important challenge any Realtor faces is ‘Time Management and Proper Prioritization of their Tasks’.
This business can be chaotic, especially if one does not know how to master the priorities of the business in an efficient manner. Keeping it in mind, this is a universal and a common thread of the real estate profession. It does not matter if you are a Beverly Hills Realtor or a Los Angeles Realtor the principles remain the same.
As, Winston Churchill once said “…you create your own universe as you go along…” I find that, this is such a spot-on observation and so true in Real Estate. I am a firm believer, that you need determination, as well as you must have the proper mental attitude and resilience, just like a US Army Infantry Officer. If you do not have these attributes, you are destined to face a difficult road ahead, hence you need to be mentally prepared and have the grit to survive. These all need to be in line, well before you can prosper. My compressed advice is: the faster you incorporate these attributes into your life, the quicker you will have a successful mindset.
As R Buckminster Fuller once said, “Ninety-nine percent of who you are is invisible and untouchable”. My point being, buyers and sellers, as well as people who are inquiring about a property do not know what is going on in your life, or what has just has transpired prior to their call to you. They are expecting solid advice and answers to their questions, hence it is critical that the one per cent they see or hear is positive and helpful.
Equally important, is to have a balance in your personal life. Often this is just as difficult to achieve, because of the same reasons: Real Estate can be very disruptive in our personal life too, if we do not manage it properly.
For me, the advances in technology over the years have become a huge help. They made it possible for me to be able to work remotely from anywhere in the world. This is mostly possible by having a great laptop, a fantastic smart phone and a comfortable car with a great navigation system to name a few. Keep in mind, in case you did not know, I started my real estate career with a beeper and having to run to a pay-phone with dimes.
Just to give my most current example of work life balance: today, I was in Malibu taking pictures of my latest ocean view land listing with my smart phone and Diane joined me for the ride. On the way back, we stopped in Marina Del Rey for lunch, creating balance in work and life.
