National Cat Day October 29thToday, October 29th, is National Cat Day
~ it's the perfect day for all cat parents to wish their cats a happy day and to show them just how much they are loved and appreciated and how much joy and comfort they bring to our lives. As the NationalCatDay.com says: "we dream about, marvel at, and celebrate the lives of cats."

Adopt, don't shop for a catNational Cat Day was founded in 2005 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige "to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of cats needing rescue, as well as to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the cat(s) in their lives for the unconditional love and companionship they bestow upon us."

Colleen Paige's message continues to be  "adopt, don't shop." And that's also why #1 on my list of 15 Ways To Celebrate National Cat Day below is "adopt a cat from your local shelter and give it a fur-ever home."

15 Ways To Celebrate National Cat Day:

1. Adopt a cat (or two) from your local shelter or cat rescue and give it a "fur-ever" home.

2. Donate blankets, food and toys to your local shelter or cat rescue organization.

3. Volunteer at your local pet shelter.

4. Write your Congressman and ask that he/she support the ban of kitten mills and gas chambers in your state.

5. Bake tuna cookies for your cat.

6. Have a safety check of your home to make sure it's safe for your cat.

7. Spend the day taking photos of your cat and posting them on your Facebook page.

8. Assist an ill or elderly neighbor by cleaning their cat’s litter box and playing with their cat.

9. Commission a custom portrait painted of your cat or hire a pet photographer for a photo shoot.

10. Buy your cat a fun new toy, bed or treats!

11. Make a window perch for your cat to lay in the sun.

12. Brush your cat to eliminate excess fur and hairballs and while you're at it, give your cat a calming massage.

13. Paint your face, wear kitty ears or dress in cat related fashion.

14. Buy your cat a collar and tag with your name and number so it's easy to identify your cat just in case he/she "escapes."

15. Host a National Cat Day party and invite all your friends and their cats!

Nina,

What an adorable post coupled with fun pictures.  Quincy knows that everyday is Cat Day in his home...he rules and we obey, and my favorite cat quote is by Jean Cocteau..

'I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul.'

Cheers to all the visible souls in our lives.  A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel ~ thanks, Alexandra and Ron... reminds me of the saying "dogs have masters, cats have staff." That's sort of what it's like in my house with my Oliver.

gullaOmg, how did I miss that?  In Minneapolis we have the annual Cat film festival. It got so big, over 5,000 people showed up, that the Walker Art Center turned it over to another venue.  What would life be like without a cat?  I have a 20 year old gray cat who is like an ancient grandmother who yowls at me. Now I know that she will never die, she was sent to earth to remind me every day who is in charge.

Our Henri encounters cats on his daily walks and thinks of them as small dogs. I don't think he wants us to adopt one though.

Mary Jo Quay ~ hi Mary Jo... your comments about your cat brought tears to my eyes. I feel exactly that way about my Oliver and before him I had Tutti and Frutti who lived all over the world with us and lived to the ripe old age of 18, themselves. If we had a cat film festival in Charlotte, I'd be first in line to attend.

I've had cats since I was 5 years old (we are talking 60+ years here) and can't imagine life with one in my home. One of the joys in my life is putting up my Christmas tree each year that has nothing but cat ornaments on it.

Joe Pryor ~ hi Joe... that's too funny. Our Oliver knows a dog when he sees one and he tolerates them... other cats, however, not so much.

Nina- we've had two cats that we found and loved them!  And at one time we had a cat and two dogs. They got along just fine.  It pains me when I see strays roaming around.
