Legacy of Spies, by John Le Carre’ : a book review by Endre Barath, Jr.
As a Beverly Hills Realtor, there are times I need a distraction from the everyday activities or should I say the twists and turns of real estate negotiations. I find that a book especially a Spy Book provides me with this distraction. Lucky for me ‘Legacy of Spies’ by John Le Carre’ just came out.
Just to give a background, I have discovered John Le Carre’ when I was still a youngster, having left Communist Hungary and living in Austria during the middle of the Cold War. The book and subsequently the movie by the same name “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold” starring Richard Burton, made me a fan for life. Interestingly this was Le Carre’s second book. As the years flew by, his writing improved and I enjoyed his characters, who became almost like my friends, my acquaintances as well as some my enemies.
Over the years of reading Le Carre’s books I have detected an agenda and a political positions, I would call it a subtle distaste for the Military Industrial players and with a bit of an anti-United States spy organizations position. Having just finished reading “The Secret History of the CIA” I was able to connect the dots and see who some of his fictional characters were modeled after.
Just to be clear, you do not need to have read his previous books to enjoy this one.
This story has, what I consider different layers of perspectives. The views of the “old cold war warrior”, the views of the children who survived and the views of the current Government’s Young Turk Attorneys protecting or trying to mitigate or trying to find fault with “the old ways”.
Legacy of Spies was a fun and fast read, which has inspired me to reread the book that made him famous and I guess reading it with an older man’s perspective should be interesting was well. I enjoyed the book and if you are into Le Carre’s writing I would recommend it highly.
