I had a closing on a condo in Downtown Minneapolis this week for a woman who was downsizing and relocating from Iowa. Then the next day I met with a woman currently living in New Mexico who is thinking about buying a condo in downtown Minneapolis as a second home.
The ultimate purchase is a personal decision for every buyer, but downtown living has a unique appeal for Baby Boomers as well as Millennials… who have a lot in common in addition to being the two largest segments of the population. Both groups are gravitating to walkable, urban neighborhoods and smaller, efficient, well designed homes.
For the woman who closed this week, the strongest draw was family… her daughter lives in a condo on the skyway (which was her biggest draw). Speaking of the skyway, as I was walking the skyway to meet my buyer I encountered a retired couple talking to someone they chanced to meet telling them how much they loved living downtown… yes, smaller than their house but easier to manage and they loved the walkability of living downtown.
But I digress… she is excited to be right on the Loring Greenway and only about a block from Nicollet Mall, Orchestra Hall, only a few blocks to Lunds, and a short walk to her daughter. But what really thrilled her about this particular condo is the fact that it has a screened in porch (rare in downtown Minneapolis)!
My other buyer was interested in being close to the University and Guthrie, a river view, close to the LRT, easy access to Whole Foods and Seward Coop. But the real draw for her was also family… and a close friend from Brooklyn who relocated here.
I find the lure of family and friends is the biggest draw for Baby Boomers, whether moving into or out of the metro or having multiple homes. Regardless of your reasons, it is important to identify your non-negotiable top priorities so you don't get sidetracked by all the possibilities of downtown living… you're going to love living in Downtown Minneapolis!
