Why Did You Become a Real Estate Agent?

By
Real Estate Agent with Online Real Estate Agent Training

Why did you become a real estate agent?  What motivates you to do your best work? The answer to these two questions is not as easy as you may think.  However the key to your success depends heavily on your answers.

On the Surface

The answers I hear most often to the question, "Why did you become a real estate agent?" is to make lots of money or to have more flexibility with my time.  There is no question that both of these responses are valid reasons for becoming a real estate agent, but they are too superficial and only scratch the surface.  To succeed in real estate you must dig deeper and go well below the surface.

Ask Yourself More Questions

When trying to figure out your "why", keep asking yourself questions until you can visualize your why.  Keep asking questions until there are none left.  Here's how it works:

  • "I want to make a lot of money selling real estate."
    • Why do you want to make a lot of money?
  • "I want to travel."
    • Where do you want to go?
  • "I want to go to Italy."
    • Where in Italy do you want to go?
  • "I want to go to Rome, Venice, Milan and Florence."
    • How long do you want to stay?
  • "I want to spend 2 full weeks in Italy."
    • What do you want to see?

Paint a Picture

You get the idea.  The goal is to paint a picture of your why.  Visualize your why.  The more specific you are, the easier it will become to visualize.  Close your eyes and try to see yourself accomplishing your why.  If you still can't see it, ask yourself more specific questions.  Write it down.  Put it someplace where you will see it everyday.  Make it a part of you.  It's important for you to be very clear on your why because this is the motivating factor in everything you do.  Your "why" will inspire you to do your best work.  Whenever you get off track or don't feel like doing the activities you need to do to achieve your goals, stop and visualize your why.  Doing this will help you get unstuck and move forward.

No Secret to Success

How many times have you read an article or a blog post talking about, "The Secrets of Top Producers?"  We all know what it takes to be a successful real estate agent.  There aren't any secrets.  It takes work.  It means doing the activities that will generate business and doing them consistently, not even now and then.  The issue most of us have is staying focused.  When success doesn't come as quickly as we think it should we do one of three things.  Either we switch gears and try something new, stop doing revenue producing activities or we have a pity party. It's easy to feel sorry for yourself.  It appears that everyone around has it all figured out...and you don't.

Why Your "Why" Is Important

Having a pity party gets you absolutely no where.  What you need is a big WHY.  When you are crystal clear as to why you are a real estate agent you will:

  • Make the phone calls
  • Stop making excuses
  • Go to the networking events
  • Write the personal notes
  • Prepare for your appointments and open houses
  • Follow up on leads
  • Ask for the business

Do the Work

Every activity you do should be done with the intention of growing your business.  Opportunities for business present themselves daily, you just have to be on the lookout for them.  Be mindful.  Listen to what people are saying and don't be afraid to ask for the business.  When you are clear on your WHY, put in the time and do the work, success will be yours.
