Thankful My Dad And My Husband Are So Handy Around The House

By
Home Stager with Sharon Tara Transformations

I've been blessed with two very "handy" men in my life.

My dad could do and fix anything.

Growing up as a kid I don't remember ever seeing my parents hire others to do improvements and renovations around the house.

Dad built porches, changed flooring, added windows and even remodeled the entire kitchen. Plumbing, electrical...you name it, he could do it.

He did it all and he did it right.

I'm talking about quality work that withstood the test of time.

They say that women choose men like their dad.

I guess that's true, because my husband is another man who can do and fix anything.

Long before the Internet came along and provided answers at our fingertips, my dad and my husband were diy specialists.

Now, armed with the power of the Internet, there is no job my husband won't tackle.

Example:

Our laser printer is quite old and has always been a challenge for me to run. Lately, though, it hasn't been working at all...sending all jobs to the queue. The other day I mentioned we should buy a new one.

My husband went online and the next thing I know he is preheating the oven.

According to something he found online, he followed these steps to fix our printer:

Remove the circuit board from printer.

Unsolder the battery.

Place parchment paper on a baking pan and then add four little "feet" made from aluminum foil.

Place circuit board on top of foil feet.

Bake in oven at 400° for 8 minutes.

Cool.

Solder the battery and replace into printer.

Guess what?

It worked! Printer has been working like a charm for four days now!

How long will it continue to work?

Who knows....who cares?

It didn't cost us anything, and it's a GREAT story!

When I was younger I didn't fully appreciate what a treasure it was to have a handy man around the house. I thought all men were like my dad.

It wasn't until I was married a few years that I found out not all men are like my husband.

Turns out that there are men out there who can't so much as turn a screw!

I am very thankful to have two very

handy, capable, hardworking, brilliant men in my life!

Sharon Lee  I find in my staging business that many of the sellers are just not handy enough for simple repairs. It's still surprising to me sometimes.

Gita Bantwal  I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was such a strange thing....I guess we didn't have anything to lose by trying it.

Wow that is a cool tip.  Who would have ever thought to bake the circuit board.

Belinda Spillman  Certainly NOT me. I don't think I would be able to even identify the circuit board. LOL

Thanks for the feature. I appreciate it!

Sharon,

That is so wonderful to have men with fix it talents.  Ron has some of that in him, and I have a way with machines...not to extent of fixing a printer.  A

Trudy would never have let me put it in the oven...however handy she thinks I am. Not sure I would have trusted myself to out it in the over as well.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel  In this case, he found the info he needed online and then understood the process well enough to pull it off. Sometimes all you need is the right information.

Nick & Trudy Vandekar, 610-203-4543  Not sure I would have been too thrilled with him doing it, had I known what he was doing. It's not a concern over the printer parts he was baking, it's more a concern of my oven getting damaged somehow. But, I wasn't in the kitchen at the time and it all worked out!

Hi Sharon Tara, you're truly lucky. It's good to have family members with skills. My sister can fix pretty much anything, me..not so much. I try though.

Sharon- you are so right!!!  My father wasn't that way but Larry is. He loves doing it.  He takes care of our friends' computers even though he was not formally trained to do so. Tell Rick that I told Larry about using the oven trick and his eyes lit up.

I wish that I was more inclined to fix things myself, it sure is a more affordable way to go, especially since everything is on YouTube these days on how to fix things, haha.

Beth Atalay  My children are pretty handy too. We are a true diy family!

Kathy Streib  I know that Rick and Larry could be great friends. The more we talk about them, the more similar they seem.

Amanda S. Davidson  I swear he can do anything. At the very least he will do the research to see if he want to attempt it before hiring someone.

Rebecca Gaujot  I didn't realize he was putting the oven on for the printer. I figured he gave up on that project and was making himself something to eat. He's a great cook too!

Brian England  It's risky if you don't know what you are doing. Some people should not even attempt certain things. It can cost far much more if you don't know what you are doing and make things worse. It's best to know and accept our limitations.

Hi Sharon -- yeah, I am pretty handy too -- as in throwing them up when the situation calls for it.   My Dad was and still is quite good with tools although my Mom must have a handyman(my brother-in-law) on speed dial.

Michael Jacobs  Knowing WHEN to throw up the hands is a good thing. It's those men who have no clue that they have no clue that are the problem!

OK, Sharon. I could have written this post, (except for baking the printers' circuit board).  My dad could fix anything too, and I thought all men should be able to do the same thing. I soon found out that wasn't true.
