USAA - There's No Point in Looking Elsewhere.  Really?



     Actually, their ad reads "Theres no point in looking elsewhere really".   I corrected it in my title for accuracy.  The photo seen here is an actual shot of USAA blowing smoke out of their "you know what". 



     This isn't a blog post to rip into USAA.  There are plenty of people already doing that throughout the inter-web, but I am here to point out that USAA needs to really take a long hard look at their business model and advertising, and should be more honest with the folks that they serve.



     "There's no point in looking elsewhere really" is what the service member in a recent USAA commercial proclaims.  USAA would love their clients to believe that.  It would avoid people saving money on insurance, getting better mortgage rates, and working with better professionals by shopping around elsewhere.



     As with so many "WE CARE ABOUT THE VETERANS!!!" marketing companies, USAA does a poor job of combining their message with true value.  I've seen USAA's mortgage rates.  They ain't' great.  I've seen their insurance rates, too.  And I've seen plenty of clients save money by switching insurers.  And should I get started on the slimy practice of "stealing" business from hard working real estate agents in a shake down effort to take in a 35% referral fee from their "affiliated" real estate agents?  



     I know a few folks that are very happy with USAA service.  But I have a huge issue with any company that discourages, however subtly, shopping for financial services.  And stating "there's no point in looking elsewhere" is doing exactly that.  



     Marketing gimmicks these days are heartless.  Companies and corporations largely care about one thing and one thing only.  Hint:  It's not Veterans.  It's not puppies.  It's not your happiness.  



Spoiler Alert:  It's money



     The American flags you see in advertising?  The service members saluting?  They're there to get money from patriots and veterans.  



     With so many less-than-wonderful companies target marketing toward the veteran demographic, we need to educate our vets and clients in general of the marketing gimmicks that are becoming more and more prevalent.  



Are you a customer of USAA or a Vet in need of a mortgage or any other financial service?  Unlike USAA, I advise you to shop around for the best deal.  I also advise that you give me a call to see what we can do.  With specials running through the end of the year for Veterans using the VA loan program, our rates are outstanding, second only to service.  But shop around to see that for yourself.  Don't take mine, or any other company's, word for it.

I have seen those commercials usually muted which is how we watch TV.  The only time we don't shop is when we have worked with an excellent proven professional, then we stay loyal to them.

I always advise clients to shop and compare and also to consider if they click with the person they are going to be dealing with through whatever the process is. The same when we interview with a potential client, I also explain I am interviewing them to make sure we can provide them with the service they want and also to know whether we are going to drive each other crazy because of different communication styles.

I agree with you and then some! My loyal "U" clients who take my advice and shop around are absolutely stunned and shocked to learn "U" didn't offer them the best rate, service or fees.

Couldn't agree more, worked for them for a while.  Green Pea rookies with 6 weeks training as LO's were advising 5 star Generals on their mortgage options.  Could'nt take it, so I left, happily.  Good people, well intentioned, poor business model for mortgages.  Can't speak to other parts of their business, but you will and can do much better, so shop around.

I would never recommend USAA. When I got my divorce many years ago, they dropped my homeowner's insurance without telling me . The dear EX told them to. Eccch! I only found out when I went to switch companies, only to find I had NO insurance. My kids still use them for CD's or something, but I'm not getting into it with them.

I had my own experience with USAA. A wondeful couple called me and I was enjoying working with them very much. Unfortunately, then they bought the USAA line completely. I couldn't get them to understand that once they got started, the outlook would not be so rosy due to lack of personal attention to their needs. I just hope they did OK in the end.
