Bill Gates' Firm Invests $80M To Build "Smart City" West Of Phoenix, Arizona
Perhaps what is one of the best examples illustrating Arizona's steadfast position at the leading edge of trends in American urban planning and development, a 24,800-acre land west of Phoenix has drawn one of Bill Gates' firms to invest $80 million into developing it into a "smart city" of the future. Belmont, as what the proposed community is being called, will embrace "cutting-edge technology and infrastructure, designed around high-speed digital networks, data centers, new manufacturing technologies and distribution models, autonomous vehicles and autonomous logistics hubs."
While only a few people currently live in the area, plans for Belmont call for a projected 80,000 homes, 3,800 acres zoned for commercial and office use, 3,400 acres of open space and 470 acres for public schools. It will also be situated along the path of the future Interstate 11 which would run from Reno, Nevada, to Mexico. Belmont is envisioned growing in square miles and population comparable to Tempe but it might very well make an impact on the Valley’s growth pattern itself.
