Polar Bears Are "Threatened"...Placed on list by Interior Department

By
Real Estate Agent with Beach & Luxury Realty, Inc.

The U.S. Interior Department is back in the news this week. This time is for placing the Polar Bear on the "threatened" species list under the Endangered Species Act. After a 15-month study was conducted, the Secretary viewed the criteria and I believe correctly placed the Polar Bear on this list.

To view the News Release from the Interior Department, please visit this link. It contains a link within the article to view the models & study that were conducted in this determination. Also, the Secretary has once again, opened a 60 day period for public comment on this issue. News, U.S. Department of Interior

Also at the Department of Interior's website, http://www.doi.gov is a timeline regarding this issue dating back to December 2006.

You're welcome Andrew. I'm just trying to get the word out, as it's not often we citizens get to voice ourselves publicly to our government officials.

I hate seeing endangered animals...some people just seem to take them for granted or just don't care

You are so right BLR Guy in that people take animals for granted! It is sad that we have to place species on a "Threatened" or "Endangered" list just so that they can be around for generations to come.

CRIS, it saddens me that these manificent creatures are subject to extinction.  I hope one day see a Polar Bear while the opportunity still exist. I certainly hope they don't end up being removed from their normal environment and housed in zoos. Thanks for the information links.

Dionne, I agree that these animals have to be placed on the list. If it's not the polar ice, which is their home, they get hunted and their food supply is also diminishing. Hopefully, there will be a way for them to survive and this unfortunately, is the start.
