I’m Thankful for All Those Who are Working Today!

Happy Thanksgiving I just thanked a young woman at Frazier Farms in Oceanside for working today.

I was there to pick up a turkey (yes, for the very first time we decided, with all that’s going on and only the 3 of us, a partially cooked turkey was the way to go this year - we’ll doctor it up and prepare some other dishes, too) and I wanted her to know I appreciated she was there. It brought a big smile to her face and a warm thank you.

Think of how many others are working today. Perhaps you are yourself!!

They may or may not have a choice, and spending time at work while others are enjoying the holiday might feel a little odd. Or perhaps it’s like that every holiday. Consider all the service providers, the restaurant employees, those at stores and gas stations and other services, medical personnel, airline and airport employees, hotel staff, people at the food banks, shelters and soup kitchens…the list goes on.

While we might be focused on our holiday preparations, or getting there, so many are out there working just like any other day.

Think about it? Who can YOU thank today for what they are doing? They might be celebrating later, but right now they are at work helping others.

I’m thankful for all those who are working today to help others while many of us enjoy our holiday . Thank you!!

Our oldest son is a Firefighter/Paramedic and he has to work so many holidays.

I am disappointed that he could not be with his family, including us, but am thankful he and all other First Responders are in place to make sure everyone else has a safe and healthy day.

Yes. I seldom leave the house on Thanksgiving, but I knew that if I suddenly remembered something I needed, our local grocery store was going to be open. And think of all the restaurant workers who serve those who prefer not to cook at home on holidays.

I worked on many holidays while in nursing school, and also as an RN. Hospitals never close. I didn't mind working because it was quieter on the unit, no surgeries were planned, and often there were empty beds so the patient load was less. The drive into work and home again was easier, less traffic. And if my being on duty allowed someone else to be home with kids and family, that added to my good feeling about working on a holiday. I think that these days, hospitals may pay a bonus per shift for working on a holiday, though I'm not certain about that. In my day, it was just another shift that had to be covered.

Michael Eisenberg - I have to agree. It really has gotten rather ridiculous, and it's all driven by companies wanting to make more money People will still shop for the holidays, even if not on Thanskgiving evening, or at the crack of dawn on Black Friday. Hope you had a wonderful holiday.

Well there were certainly lots of people working on the holiday, and so much more of it is retail than we use to have - hospitals and such have always been there on this holiday. It's nuts!

I talked to a lady that works two jobs and she worked yesterday and got to work today at 4 AM and will work until midnight tonight. I know some people have no choice.
