I moved back to Williamsburg, Va. from Amelia Island, Fl. in February of 2015. My daughter had met and married a local firefighter and was they were expecting their first child. I wanted to be actively involved in my grandson's life. I never would have guessed that Layla would join her brother less than 16 months later.
Both my daughter and son-in-law are first responders. Jamie is a registered nurse in the emergency department at a local hospital and Josh is an EMT/firefighter.
Since first responders do so much to help us, it is always nice to "pay it forward" to them. Here are a few ideas:
1) Drop a basket of goodies by the local police station, fire house or the emergency department in a local hospital.
2) Send thank you notes or cards to any first responders you know. Consider including a gift card to a movie theatre, car wash or restaurant.
3) First responders have to work on holidays so they may not be able to celebrate on the actual holiday. Offer to take care of something for them, such as helping out with an elderly parent, inviting one of their family members to spend the holiday with you or taking care of a pet for the day.
These small tokens of appreciation will likely be a surprise to the first responder and should be much appreciated.
