Go Ice Skating by the Sea

at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego

Once again it’s time to enjoy the very popular Skating by the Sea at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, the 13th consecutive year. And it’s the only beachfront ice skating in San Diego!

For those of you in colder climates, imagine ice skating under a bright blue sky with the sun shining, palm trees waving, and the beautiful beach and ocean just steps away!? While you may need a sweater, especially with ocean breezes, typically at this time of year you can expect temps in high 50s to low 60s. And we just had a heat wave over Thanksgiving with temps in the 80s!

Hotel Del Coronado

The Hotel Del Coronado is a San Diego icon and has been for years. The Del, as it’s fondly called, is a special place by the beach and ocean, and well worth a visit for dining, or just drinks, especially during the holidays when the property and hotel are beautifully decorated. There’s abundant shopping in the area if you need another gift, and great people watching, too. But why not enjoy skating by the sea, or just watching the skaters?!

The Skating by the Sea at The Del opened on Thanksgiving Day, and will remain open until January 1, 2018!  And a portion of the proceeds from this fun and popular event will benefit the Make-A-Wish San Diego Foundation.

Jeff,

Got to love it.  We had a friend who represented skating stars, and I remember that they often traveled from venue with an ice rink in a truck to assemble!

It IS a beautiful place. We have never stayed but have visited many times and enjoy the skaters and all there is to see and do there and nearby. Such a gorgeous setting!

I think we visited over the holidays the first year we lived here. Coming from New England it was quite a sight to see ice skating on the beach under the palm trees in the 60s! I love it. Perhaps someday I will venture out on skates - it's been many decades!!

Good morning Jeff.

For those who want to skate they can come here and do it for free.  It will be around 30-45 days before the temps will allow that

Jeff, what a beautiful setting to ice skate in. The Del looks like it would be a great place to stay anytime of year but, I'm picturing the holiday decorations and I bet that really makes it extra special this time of year.

I was there in May. I didn't realize they had a skating rink. So neat that you can skate by the ocean.

Ice skating by the sea . . . . palm trees . . .  . Now that's my idea of ice skating.

Good luck and success.

James Dray  - but then you have to deal with the weather cold enough to freeze the ice. Did that for years - now glad I can avoid it!!

Hi Amanda S. Davidson

The Del is a beautiful, classic hotel in a gorgeous setting, and particularly beautiful at the holidays. It's always fun to visit, despite the crowds at holiday time, and to see the ice skating.

Hi Jane Peters  - I am pretty sure the rink is only temporary. But definitely a fun sight to see ice skating on the beach under the palm trees - so different from my experience growing up back East and in New England.

Hi Lou Ludwig

Given where you live I totally get that. Certainly a different experience.
