Christmas morning at our house had a traditional menu that was not served on any other day....and something everyone looked forward to before presents were opened and the rest of the day celebrated.
When people visit Wisconsin one of the things that they enjoy most is the cheese and sausage....and if people are transferred to another state, they often order these "Wisconsin delicacies" delivered to them in their new location.
Christmas morning always had what we called..."snails"...no it was not escargot for breakfast...they are actually called Saucisschens and it very lean pork sausage wound around on a stick that sort of resembles a "snail." Sometimes done stove top, sometimes on the grill and the newest member of the family always found a collection of everyone else's empty sticks on their plate...a "welcome to the family" sort of tradition. The "snails" were accompanied by an egg bake that I make with a crust on the bottom and the eggs include a variety of colorful vegetables and but of course, Wisconsin cheese in a variety or two.
No Christmas morning menu would be complete without the addition of cinnamon monkey bread; another taste
treat reserved only for Christmas morning...and is "monkey proof" to make ! Mmmmm the aroma of cinnamon as it bakes .....nothing like it !
And the Mimosa always adds a touch of fun to the menu ....with a Christmas toast to the holiday offered by a family member. No one ever left the table hungry....the fruit platter was always a festive addition of color, texture and fun to arrange in different eye pleasing and palate pleasing patterns.
A potato bake...with you guessed it...with cheese rounded out this holiday menu and of course....there were leftovers for everyone to take home and enjoy all over again.
Top it off with a hot cup of freshly brewed coffee and it just couldn't get any better !
No one ever leaves the table hungry at our house and this holiday meal was certainly no exception to that rule !
Cherish every holiday meal you have....when your guests are gone ....you have the memories that will last you a lifetime.
