Do you have a bucket list?

Do you have a bucket list?

I’ve never liked that term nor understood where it came from. A bucket list?

To me a bucket is something you use to feed or water the horse, or use to hold sudsy hot water for reverse bucket listscrubbing. Nevertheless, I do understand the meaning, so – onward.

If you do have a bucket list, it reminds you of all the things you want to do in this lifetime that you haven’t yet done. If the list is long, I expect it could be pretty discouraging. You might feel that you have no chance of getting through it in this lifetime.

So why not make a reverse bucket list – one filled with all the things you have done and all the goals you have accomplished?

I recall a class from years ago when participants were asked to list the 5 things they’d accomplished that made them feel proud of themselves.

At first I thought I had nothing to write, but then I stopped to think. Yes, I did, beginning with raising a couple of fine sons, and going on to helping found our local animal rescue. Before long I had to stop and think which 5 made me feel happiest.

What do you bet, you could do the same thing?

Once you’ve written down everything you can think of, go back and choose the five accomplishments that make you feel most proud of yourself.

By the time you’ve finished, you’ll be feeling pretty darned good about yourself. You might even feel more motivated to tackle the items in your other bucket list.

One more step to happiness…

rocksIf you end your day and drift off to sleep feeling good, you’ll sleep more soundly and wake up feeling happier. As a result, your morning and perhaps your entire day will go more smoothly.

Sound good? Then take this advice from “The Magic.”

Find a nice little rock, one that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. (Rhonda calls it your magic rock.)

Keep it by your bed, and each night before you go to sleep, hold that magic rock while you think back over your day and try to decide which was the best thing that happened in the day.

This exercise takes your mind away from the things that went wrong or were simply annoying. It forces you to go back over all the good things in order to decide which was the best. As you go through those positive events, say thank you for each of them.

But be warned – you may fall asleep before you make the decision on which was best. That’s OK, because either way, you’ll be ending the day on a positive note.

A timely reminder today, Marte Cliff ... it's easy to get overwhelmed this time of the year.  Personally and business-wise.  It's good to take stock and be joyful of all the things we HAVE accomplished ... instead of looking at just what still needs to be done ...

You're one smart cookie, Marte!

We have a "journey album" , and it's added to each vacation.  We find something unique to see/do every place we go. The vacation this past summer was filled with such places and pages and pages were added.  I hope some day my daughter and grandchildren will enjoy flipping through the pages and knowing that Donald and I lived a joyful life filled with adventure.

Your post reminded me of the movie The Bucket List! But I like your idea for a bucket list much better! True, why not focus more on the achievements rather than the things not yet accomplished.

Sounds like many of us are in agreement that having a positive focus is optimal. I'd love to see the study on those who fill a reverse bucket list versus those who strive to fill a bucket list.

The only thing that has ever been on my bucket list is to learn the Electric Slide. I'm not sure why I haven't done it yet. Maybe because then there won't be anything on the list if I do. I love the idea of the reversed list. After all I was on national TV this year. The DIY channels First Time Flippers show on Saturdays. Our epidode is called Tropic Blunder. And being on TV was not even on my list.

Awesome post Marta. You just made me go make my list and I was completely surprised how quickly 5 things flowed to paper. I belong to a gratitude group on facebook and Im going to suggest this as one of our exercises. Practicing gratitude is such an underrated activity, but the effects of it are so intensly profound.

Far to often we carry the negative things from our past and they interfere with now and the future.

I love your suggestion to think back about the positive events in your life.

They will also impact now and the future but with a much better result.

No matter how bad your day is, concentrating on the things that did go right is likely to help you get a better night's sleep - that in turn will likely make the day to come even better!

Hi Marte -- yet more to ponder...including the origin of "bucket list".

Hi Marte Cliff   I don't have a rock...or even a least not a clean one anyway.

I do, however, think a lot about how fortunate I am and how blessed I am with a great family and how even with the aches and pains we have in America...I would rather live here than anywhere else.

I do not waste a lot of time on the negative because there is too much positive going on all the time.

Have a great day!

That is such a great idea!  I had the day from heck yesterday but now that I think about it, there were several good things.  Here's the interesting parts:

After returning from my 8 am Firestone visit to check my tires and car I just bought, the low tire sensor came on; I hit a dove; and my phone died.  Firestone checked my tires and they were fine, just a sensor; there is not a mark on my bumper where the bird hit and I don't see him anywhere on the road; and Verizon reset my phone and it's fine.  Ta da!
