Mike shares his thoughts on a very important topic.... defining and creating your own destiny.... enjoy!!

I am a firm believer that I define and create my own destiny. For many years, I was a counselor. During those days, I remember so many clients who came into my office with problems that were taken right from their lineage.

When I asked why they were following their family norms, they would say, "That's all I know." And, I would insert "That's why you're here" " I would also always ask, "Why don't you define your own destiny?" If the family norms were good and healthy, there was no reason to break away, but most people didn't end up in my office because they came from healthy families. They ended up in my office because they came from damaged families.

Destiny is within your grasp. I come from a family of men who die young with heart issues. I decided in 1977 that I was going to break the mold. I am currently the oldest surviving male in my family (61). And, I plan on seeing my 3 year old granddaughter graduate college, have a family and be self-sufficient. That means I need to hang around a while, and I plan on it.

That brings me to my point. You define your destiny and you create your future. It doesn't matter what your childhood was. Mine was not healthy or supportive, but that didn't mean that I couldn't raise my sons in a healthy and supportive environment. I knew the difference as a child, and I chose to do something different from my predecessors.

This is one time I don't mind using the pronoun "I". Why? Because I choose to live healthy. I choose to exercise. I choose to eat right. I choose to get enough sleep. I choose to be in business for myself. I choose to set my course for the future, and I choose my own destiny. I choose to be successful. I choose to leave a legacy in my path that others can follow. It doesn't matter what my family of origin did. This is my choice.

You choose your destiny and your future. When it's all said and done, I will know that I didn't short-change my life because of the negative impact of others, but I drew on every fiber of my being to be different and to be what I wanted to be. Set your own destiny and future.

Hi, Barbara and by extension, Hi Mike.

Can I brag about my Dad?  He was born in a farmhouse in rural north Florida in 1932, during the Great Depression.  His own father left the family when my Dad was 2 years old.   My Dad was raised by his mother and her mother.  They had very little money; there was no welfare, no social security, no EBT.

Fast forward - my Dad worked two and sometimes 3 jobs, delivering papers, working as a janitor, whatever, to save up for college.  He spent two years in the Army, Korean War.  When he got out, he got a Master's Degree from FSU, then he went to Emory Dental School in Atlanta.

As a Dentist, he was a respected civic leader in his town.  He also made a lot of money; he took care of his mother, his aunts, whoever else in the family needed help.

Thanks for reading my long answer.  When I hear someone tell me they can't control their destiny, I tell them about my Dad!
