Mike: The park is a public-private partnership with the USNWC. The pledges of taxpayer money allowed the center to borrow money from seven banks, and the project increased to $38 million from an original estimate of $21 million back in 2007. Both Gaston & Mecklenburg Counties are subsidizing losses for the first seven years of operation. As for 'who' the brainchild was for this project, I don't remember but, I remember city and county officials supported the idea and taxpayers weren't very happy to be pitching-in back in the initial phases of development. Now, we're THRILLED that the park is here and proud to be a host for the Olypmic trials as well!
