Today is the 76th anniversary of the sudden ruthless attack by the Japanese at our Pacific naval headquarters at Pearl Harbor. As President Roosevelt put it, "a day that will live infamy....
the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific."
In fact, the surprise attack which began at 7:48 in the morning caused 18 ships to be sunk or run aground. Attacks by 353 Janpanese aircraft surprise what was then a non-combatanct force. The killing of 2,403 America caused the U.S. todeclare war with Japanese and then with Germany and Italy within 4 days. It did indeed live in infamy.
