Where did all the neighbors go?

I remember when I was a little girl how everyone use to be outside!  The kids would all play together while the parents all chatted about "grown-up stuff".  In the summertime we would play tag and hide-n-seek until 9:30 or 10pm!  We had so much fun.  When families had a bbq, anyone who was out and about was more than welcome to stop by and get something to eat!  Now, I look out my window and nobody is out!  I have neighborts that I haven't even met!  The neighbors have their shades drawn and doors closed!  I can't imagine spending my day never seeing the light of day!  When they do finally come out of the house to get the mail or get in their car to go somewhere, they hold their heads down like they are scared to death to even say "hello"!  It's kind of sad, they must live a depressing life.  The first thing I do in the morning when I awake is open my blinds and my door!  Life is good when you enjoy the simple things like the morning sunshine and the smell of the crisp morning air!

I remeber those days. I still bbq and invite the neighbors. But, now people think they have to be doing something all day and most of the night.

I also find it sad.  I'll walk the dog and/or baby and try to wave to people driving by and less than half even acknowledge my wave.

I'm afraid the idiot box as my Dad used to call it has taken center stage, and the great out-doors for many is something they pass through on their way to the car, school, work Etc.. sad isn't it.

Cheryl,

I remember those as well. Not just in my childhood but my childrens'.

It is a sad commentary on our society and the fears we have towards strangers.

I am very fortunate to have recently moved to a neighborhood where I feel safe letting my grandaughter run and play as my children did when they were young. Where there has been two neighborhood BBQs' in the last 3 months. And where there are neighbors looking out for one another.

I get my grandaughter every other weekend and this is her favorite place to be because she is not stuck infront of the TV. Her quote, "I like getting dirty Mema"

We should all get a little more "dirty".

Laura,

That's what I don't understand!  We live in a very safe neighborhood and people just don't come out anymore.  Maybe everyone is in their backyards?  I just wish when I say "good morning' or "good evening" to some of my neighbors, I would at least be acknowledged!

Our neighborhood is great!  In fact my 3 yr old has older friends( ranging from 2-9) from the neighborhood come over all the time and invite him outside to play.  We know all of the neighbors by first name and they know us.  It is one thing that I do love about where we live.
