If your home could give Santa a wish list, what would be on it? Think it’s granite counters and stainless appliances? You might be surprised! Technology tops everyone’s gift list, and your home is no different! The latest gadgets to make your home safer, more energy efficient, or more convenient are every techie’s dream. Here are just a few ideas for you:
Goal Zero Generator
Oh, the by-gone days…we sure miss the noise and smell of gas-powered generators, don’t we? Not. Well fear not, intrepid outdoorsy types! The Goal Zero generator is a solar-powered powerhouse that is perfect for tailgating, power outages, or camping (because, really, who camps without electricity?). With the ability to power devices or small appliances, the Goal Zero features a rechargeable battery that can be powered via solar panels or it can be plugged into your wall outlet. Goal Zero generators have multiple ports (USB, 12V and traditional AC), so no need to purchase additional adapters or other equipment, and come in several sizes/outputs to meet your needs.
The Goal Zero generator is fairly expensive, ranging from just shy of $400 for the Goal Zero Yeti 150, to $2,000 for the Goal Zero Yeti 1250. But, depending on frequency of use, you will save that in fuel purchases to run a traditional generator. The generators are available from certain high-end retailers or directly through the Goal Zero website.
Never get locked out of your house again! The August Smart Lock uses wi-fi connected to a hand-held device or cell phone to lock/unlock your door remotely, and is installed over the existing deadbolt. Keep your home more secure by forgoing multiple copies of house keys, which can easily be lost or stolen. Instead of a key, you can give family, friends, the dog walker, nanny, or anyone else who usually requires a key to enter your home, the ability to unlock the door via a smartphone app. You can also receive notifications on who is entering your home and when.
Not sure if you remembered to lock the door after leaving for vacation? Use your device to check on the lock status and secure the lock remotely. A Doorbell Cam also provides HD video and two-way audio, so you can see who is at your door, whether you are home or not.
You may already have a Nest in your home. No, we aren’t talking about a bird’s nest! Nest has made waves in the home energy efficiency with the Nest thermostat, and now they are bringing the next generation in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Nest Protect offers several key improvements over traditional emergency detectors. Have trouble remembering to test your alarm and check the batteries? Nest Protect checks itself automatically, 400 times per day! Set off the alarm while cooking? Suppress the noise from an app on your phone.
Nest Protect can tell the difference between smoke and steam, and all Nest products are built to coordinate with one another. For instance, in case of a fire, Nest Protect can communicate with the Nest Thermostat to shut off the furnace and to prevent gas leakage. You can even receive alerts from Nest Protect on your cell phone or device, so you can monitor your home while away.
Logitech Harmony Elite
Seems like lately every electronic device has its own remote. Instead of collecting a box of remotes in your family room and scrambling to find the right one when you need it, the Logitech Harmony Elite puts the “universe” in “universal remote”. This grand-daddy of remotes can control 270,000 different entertainment and smart devices, from the TV and cable box, to streaming devices, gaming consoles, and stereo systems, as well as lighting systems, and Nest. Logitech Harmony Elite also coordinates with Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
In addition to the remote, Harmony Elite also includes the Harmony Hub and the Harmony app. The Hub allows you to go completely wireless, by creating a “central” command for all your devices through wi-fi or Bluetooth wireless signals. The Harmony app turns your hand-held device into a powerful remote, and allows you to monitor and control your linked home systems from anywhere.
The Bottom Line
Every year, home electronics and systems become more sophisticated and powerful. There are many products out there that can help automate your home, increase efficiency, or simplify life in your home. So if technology is on your home’s wish list (or that of your resident technophile), you won’t be lacking options. Do your homework, talk to people who are currently using automation products, and check product reviews before making a major purchase!
