My favorite Christmas memory is the first Christmas after my heart attack. What were you doing 5 years ago on December 10? Exactly 5 years ago? Remember? I do. At 1:30 am I was jarred awake by a crushing pain in my chest, sweating like a pig, and realized I was having a heart attack. Approximately 15 minutes later in the ER at Riverside my heart went into V-tach, or ventricular tachycardia, or something that is spelled close to that. I was technically dead for 40 seconds, wasshocked back to the real world, was rushed into the cath lab at Riverside and had a lifesaving stent installed.
The next couple weeks were a blur, but I remember how emotional I was every time I saw someone I was close with, and we would both just hug and cry, it happened several times. This picture of my family was taken on Christmas day 2012. It's one of my favorite pictures. 
Today I look back on the past 5 years as the best years of my life, appreciating everything maybe just a bit more than I used to. I can still remember the ambulance ride, the ER, the operation, the room without a view in ICU, and getting to go home 3 days later. And yes, as a vegetarian for these past 5 years I still remember how much I loved bacon and brats and sausage pizza, but I realized quite easily that nothing compares or is the same as spending time with my wife and kids and grandkids and family and friends. So here's to another 5-10-15-20 years of healthy heart and happy life.
