Throwback Thursday - Shadows of the Solstice In Red Rock Country

Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage NRDS # 146013739

Sedona Solstice

Cottages At Coffeepot Winter Solstice

The image above was taken on the Solstice this morning. Over the years I have watched and compared the shadows created by the sun as it rises in the morning.

Today I took this image of Coffeepot Rock and noticed something different that I didn't realize before. There are no real shadows on the red rock. The sun is at it's south-eastern most point today and the shadows are very slight.

My back wall is perpendicular to the sun on this date. Starting tomorrowthe sun will appear to be moving back to the north. I was pretty sure I had an image of Coffeepot on the Summer Solstice and decided to compare. Below you can see the difference of the shadow on the rock.

Coffeepot Rock on Summer Solstice

In the image above taken in 2013 on the Summer Solstice, you can't even tell that there is "spout" or beak at the very top because there is no shadow to define it!

See the images below to compare the definition of the rock.

The image above is a scan of an original picture taken by a relative visiting in 1962. This is a movie set - before homes ever existed in this site. The picture was pirated by a "nostalgia" post card company prior to watermarking!

Every one of these images is of the same red rock formation.

Hi Sheri

I love these photos, the differences in the light and shadows, and of course the history you shared! The red rocks in Sedona are truly amazing to see, at any time of the year!

The colors are so vibrant....and while we have some rock formations in Wisconsin...they lack the paint of the desert.

Morning Sheri.

Don't you wish back in 62 a relative would have bought up most of the land and willed it to you...  Anyway what a wonderful sight to see everyday.

That is such a cool observation with regard to the shadows or lack thereof.  It would be great to have this as a daily view for sure!

Interesting Sheri.  It was this movement of the sun that ancients used as the blueprint to align their religious structures.
