GPS Navigation Twilight Zone

There was an episode of The Twighlight Zone (probably a few episodes) that dealt with a computer who had become jealously in love with it's creator and messed up his life. Okay, my GPS hasn't gone to that level, but I did get the feeling it was trying to tell me something today.

I live in Southern California. In this area if you have to drive very far without a freeway, you're probably lost or confused. Today I had to go to an appointment in an area I'm not very familiar with. It was about an hour's drive from my office. When I got off the freeway in the area where my appointment was, my GPS Navigation said, "Drive 12 miles then turn left". During those 12 miles I passed under two freeways. I felt like my GPS was trying to tell me something... kind of like that computer in The Twighlight Zone... except this message wasn't quite so amorous.

Anyway... the lesson for me today was to scroll through the turn-by-turn screen when I'm going into unfamiliar territory and not always trust the GPS is on my side. On the return trip, I got on a freeway about two miles from my appointment, drove freeway speed the whole way back to the office, and saved a good amount driving time.

My GPS is currently standing in the corner with it's nose against the wall.

Have a good one,

- Dennis
