Here are some takeaways from 2018 design predictions compiled from multiple sources such as Houzz, Pinterest, House Beautiful, Elle Decor, HGTV…

Renewed focus on curation and simplification as people spend more money on experiences than ‘stuff’, and look for calm and peace in their living spaces.

  • Rooms than are practical as well as beautiful
  • Peaceful, monochromatic spaces created by tone-on-tone colors
  • Homes that reflect personality while showcasing a few pieces that make it feel current
  • Warmer colors throughout the home… warm grays, reds, earthy shades of camel, yellow, brown-blacks, jewel tones such as teal and purple
  • Casual and calm modern bedrooms in soft neutrals and simple, functional pieces
  • Spa-like, resort style bathrooms
  • Greenery, including patterned plants and plant ‘wonder walls’ such as in the photo above
  • Shades of black is the new gray
  • Pops of color
  • Standout ceilings (note painted ceiling in photo above)

Color in the kitchen gives a warmer, more personal touch and also hides cooking stains and imperfections.

  • All white kitchens are out, adding color in accessories and mixed color cabinets… or opting for warm wood tones
  • Counter tops are favoring the low maintenance of quartz and concrete, the beauty of marble over granite
  • No more white and stainless steel sinks… bring in concrete, stone, copper and composite sinks in darker hues of gray, bronze, black
  • Backsplashes that look like wood, resin, fabric, wallpaper, concrete
  • Floating shelves may look great, but cabinetry is back… most people need space for practical storage, whether in built-in cabinets or statement stand-alone pieces
  • Mixed metals

Home decor trends from around the world… what’s out, what’s in

  • Painted accent walls are out… rather incorporate timeless texture such as millwork or wainscoting for interest
  • Big, bold botanical prints are making a comeback, as is oversized geometric art
  • Bare walls are out, wall art is in… both in art gallery walls and large statement pieces used in both traditional and modern spaces
  • Bamboo flooring is out because of low durability and negative effects on biodiversity and carbon emissions
  • Edison bulbs and exposed track lighting are out, favoring the sleekness of recessed lighting
  • Black and white is in… patterns, prints, accessories, geometric tiles
  • Standout lampshades are in… white drum lampshades are out, strong interest in pleated, patterned, even wicker lampshades
  • Blending of pendant lighting styles, including vintage aged copper pendant lights, fringed pendants… a mix of minimal and maximal tendencies
  • Statement floors and ceilings are in
    • Terrazzo flooring; herringbone, chevron tile floors; ash, soap-washed pine, custom takes on chevron patterns
    • Pay attention to your ceilings as well when you choose paint, wallpaper, textures
  • Black metals and walnut woods are in, brass and rose gold are on their way out
  • Random elements such as barn doors and pillars are on their way out
  • Accent walls, weathered wood, word art on their way out
  • Wabi-Sabi (the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection) is in… think crafty, homemade art you make/collect yourself or find on Etsy
  • Surprising stone such as marble, onyx, agate and alabaster, natural accents of wood and other earthy materials such as concrete vessels and leather drawer pulls are in
  • Bold seating… curved sofas as an alternative to the sectional, bold colors, geometric chairs
