The current issue of Natural Home has a good article about safely remodeling older homes with good, practical tips for everyone. It also conatains an article by Carol Veniola, author of NATURAL REMODELING FOR THE NOT SO GREEN HOUSE about her personal search for the perfect house. It reminded me of looking for my own house and ordeal another agent who is a friend of mine is going through.

It is partly an occupational hazard, I think. We know so much about homes and what to look for that we never stop. As much as we remind buyers that they are unlikely to get 100% of what they want in a house, even if they have it custom built, we don't seem to remember it when we are looking. Because we are used to apotting things to tell sellers to do or not do when preparing their homes we spot them everywhere we look. Sometimes we can look beyond what we consider an ugly color scheme or the "clutter" of too much "stuff" in a house and realize that it has good bones--usually when we are looking at something with a buyer other than ourselves. There is always going to be something wrong with a house. They are not usually perfect. Neither are we. Her article reminded me to remain patient with those buyers who just can't seem to make up their minds, to ask questions and nudge them rather than push. After all, isn't that where referrals come from? The extra attention adds more to the value of the transaction for them than we sometimes imagine. Exceeding expectations can be as simple as paying attention.
