Ask An Ambassador: Relationships Last Beyond The Rain

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Elite 513.520.5305 SAL.2002007747

If you've been in the Rain any length of time you realize this community is fairly fluid.  Some of us have been here for years and years, others are brand new, and others come and go, and then...well some leave and never come back.  But the phrase "gone but not forgotten" applies if they were active members and built relationships while they were here.

And while Facebook might not have really been much of a thing when we first joined ActiveRain, it's now an integral part of staying in touch with people.  The result is I have hundreds of agents from across the US and Canada that I know I can reach out to, long after they've written their last ActiveRain post.

For me, ActiveRain is the root source of all my referrals.  I'm not brand brainwashed loyal when it comes to finding the best agent to help friends/family/clients.  If I've taken nothing else away from my time in this community, it's the knowledge that good and bad agents alike work for all manner of brokerages and business models.  Good agents are good agents and liars and cheats are going to be who they are despite COEs and brokerage rules.

So when I need to place a referral, I like to go to people that I know, I trust, who've demonstrated expertise and also proved an ability to keep a level head.  And depending on the city, I've got at least one great choice for referrals, and in some cases TOO MANY good agents to pick from.  And if I don't personally know of an agent for an area, there's a solid change that one of my Rain friends past or present WILL know of a solid agent.

That was the case last week.  A past buyer client soon to be future seller client needed help for home buying in their new location.  A drive around on their own hadn't given them a good feeling.  While I didn't know an ActiveRainer that is currently active there, I knew of a past Rainer that has since retired to Florida.  A quick Facebook message and this Rainer who last blogged here in 2013 had an agent name for me.

Some quick Internet poking around by me confirmed why that agent had gotten the recommendation.  A text to the agent and I had a call back within minutes.  And after a conversation he had the pertinent information.  He called my seller/buyers and they felt MUCH better.  And he makes me look good because I recommended him (thanks to another Rainer).

It's a win-win, and it's all because the relationships built here continue well past the last blog post.

Good morning Bliz, without a doubt, ActiveRain is a great source to find agents/inspectors/mortgage brokers but it's really more than that. It's a place where we form relationships. Isn't our business all about that?

As a relatively new Active Rainer and oen who relies on referrals, I can see the value in expanding our communication network. Actuive Rain is great fir that. Thannks for the words of advice.

BLiz, this is so well stated /written.  I agree with it 100% and "feel" the same way.  While I may not post in the Rain as much as I used to (that may change in 2018) the main reason I continue to spend time here is the connections with others ... friendships created ... and the love I feel for so many people in this community.

BLiz- very well stated! Even if there is a member who may not post as they had in the past and even if they have retired, we know that we can turn to them for a referral. That's the beauty of all of they Cybertalking.

It's legit.  Active Rain is the first place I go, when looking to refer a buyer out... and I've had enough incoming buyer-referrals to tell you that it works the other direction equally as well.

If that's the ONLY reason you blog... it's worth it.  We spend hundreds, nay, thousands of dollars trying to generate new leads, new clients... why not spend a little time/money on active rain??

And as an added benefit, you get to interact (meet, might be a touch too strong a term) lots of great rainers, including those "contracted" rainers like "B'Liz".

I'm not posting much in the Rain these days but I came here today to find a referral for a buyer who needs to sell his home in another state first. AR is always my first choice to referrals. Plus, I've benefited several times from referrals. As you say, it's a win-win.

I totally agree. This is the first place I go when I need to refer someone to a quality agent elsewhere.

Good point, and I'm remiss in using AR as a source. So often I've called out of area agents who don't pick up the phone, are unenthusiastic about a new client, or treat the client poorly.  An out of state agent that I referred to a seller who was unhappy with her current agent insisted that the seller get a reverse mortgage while selling her home. Wow, that put me at a loss for words.

Good evening Liz and Bill Spear ,

I feel the same way. I read blogs from agents here in the rain and get a sense of who they are, how they do business and if they'd be a good fit for my clients. They are my first go-to for referrals and have always worked out!

Hi Bliz

You are so right on target here. The friendships we develop go far beyond one's daily, weekly or monthly activity here, or whether people are still active or not. And as far as a referral resource, AR is fantastic, either for direct referrals or because people know others and are happy to recommend them, as in your example!

I agree wholeheartedly, Bill - heck, I even try to send AR peeps referrals when they're 100 miles away! LOL

The best of the best can be found here - and the luxury of referring to peeps here is that we have a standard that we hold one another to as well.

Dear BLiz,

So true. Good agents work for all kinds of brokerages, as is very evident from the many great people around here.
