When I fist read Moby Dick by Herman Melville, it brought to my attention the adventure of going to sea for the first time. It sounds simple enough but in reality its an experience that cannot be rushed or substituted. One must put in the time and then, at some point is worthy to earn their "salt" as they say and then acquire their sea legs. That's who everyone wants to ship with
EVERY PROFESSION REQUIRES IT
Just obtaining a degree, diploma, license or permit doesn't make you ruler of all you survey. It is a purchase ticket to enter into and begin work in that chosen field. Like anything else, it requires and demands a learning curve as further payment for the choice. All must pay this price if they are to go on
NO SUBSTITUTE FOR EXPERIENCE
Being mature, seasoned and experienced is a value that everyone all over the world comes to appreciate in regards to any product or services. We all seek the tried and true i.e. the consistency and predictability of a purchase of goods or services that require our hard-earned money in return.
LOVE or MONEY?
Often I hear and see well-meaning people in all circumstances that are eager to get going & that is a good thing. However the way & how is important if not more so as each individual begins their chosen profession. If what is driving you is money that's one thing. If it is love of what you do or want...another
RESULTS DON'T LIE
Leaving motives aside the constant we are all looking at is RESULTS regardless of the drive assuming it is above board, legal and ethical. How we come into the result is important because humans require satisfaction on many levels. Emotions, intellect, psychological & spiritual needs must be fed correctly
INTERNING
Being able to get experience while learning as you go was a traditional in its concept. You usually learned the family business by growing up in it. Either you ran that at some point or you went on to your calling. There is no short-cut for knowing what you are talking about or doing. You have to know
DOTS & CONNECTIONS
There is only so much someone can teach you or that you can read about. At some point it has to add-up, click & your personal dots have to connect. When you get "it" others will too & your personal stock will go up. Being good at what you do or stand behind sells itself. Not being good sells (tells) as well
WHO PAYS?
Start-up can be dicey. It can be handled & gleaned from & makes for good teaching as long as no one else has to pay for your learning curve mistakes. That wouldn't be fair to the ones who are expecting results & who are entitled to whatever you are representing. That's why there is the following:
LICENSING & REGULATION
This is to insure a certain level of expectation by the consumer for doing business with you. Usually the rules are common sensed based but for some have to be spelled out upfront and clear to avoid misunderstanding and losses if any. Buying a car, Real Estate or expensive anything requires this:
DILIGENCE and DISCLOSURE
Not only does the consumer have to have eyes open but those that interact with them as well and it is not a request but a requirement. Failing that lawsuits abound and in many instances criminal complaints too. Intent plays a big part in the outcome of a situation. Again human nature at work
HANDS-ON
My introduction into Real Estate was through property management. I knew zero about the subject except common knowledge. Prop mgmt comes with so many different applications of practice that are impossible to study to learn. One must live through it progressing & learning as they go. Hands-on works both ways i.e. you grab on and it grips you. That's pretty intimate and commitment driven
THE LINK
With any chosen endeavor comes the common denominator of all i.e. the people element. Its all about people. The products, services and procedures are all standard for the professions but the people are all different. That brings me to the very heart of what is necessary even mandatory for any profession
INTER-PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Learning how to navigate through the different personalities is the most challenging of the life processes one will ever encounter. Pick any situation & it begins. People react & respond differently & require a minimum of predictable contact. Some require more or less maintenance than others
THE WRAP-UP
Your legs, seasoning, experience or savvy comes when it comes. It will be at times forged in the furnaces of fire or presented non-chalantly. Risks, problems and falls are opportunities to grow and of those there are no end. The professional decides how much or how quick they wish to progress but reality and in the trench testing has the final say so.
