What Is This Thing Called a Blogging Voice?

The New Year is here and some may have decided to ramp up their blogging efforts. Some may be new to blogging and are trying to find blogstheir footing.

If I could impart one thing I’ve learned from my journey here is that blogging in your own voice is what will bring people to your blog and keep them coming back.

So...what is this blogging voice?

In a nutshell, it is being who you are...it is what will distinguish your post from most any other out there that might be discussing the same or similar topic.

For the most part, write as you would speak.

Writing in your own voice lets us get to know who you are. You might not think so but through your posts, your topics, your thoughts, and how you share them, the layers of the onion are peeled back.

Ask yourself this...why is it that you’ve chosen to follow and read some of the members here?

You don’t have to answer here but seriously, ask yourself why.

There are, however, some exceptions when you might consider putting a sock in it...

~If how you speak is peppered with all sorts of words that are best be left for sailors...consider tempering it unless you truly don’t care if anyone reads your blog

~If what you say might land you in your attorney’s office ...stifle yourself unless you just like being contentious

~If grammar was not your best subject...ask someone to proofread your post and follow Marte Cliff

~If you choose to “borrow” someone else’s voice...don’t.  Readers are wise to this and will not waste time stopping by.

Ok...now start writing!

You are right on the mark with this post.   I seemed to be suffering from blogging laryngitis at the moment, but I know this is temporary.  Thank you for the great post.

Paul Graham, a venture capitalist, has a well-known piece on writing like you talk. (http://www.paulgraham.com/talk.html)

His thesis is essentially yours -- be yourself. He says not to add fluff, useless explanations for the sake of word-count, and essentially writing exactly the same way you'd speak at a lecture.

No one would speak at a conference like: "Facebook, the leading social media platform that purchased Instagram for $1b, is a great tool for agents to advertise listings and sold homes"

PG says adding in that fluffy factoid is too common and makes for an unnatural reading experience. To loop it back to your point, you have no voice when you write like that because it's just fact after fact -- there's no personality when you're merely writing out robotic words.

The 'voice' thing was very vague to me until I got comments about style. My thought was, 'what style?'  A friend of mine told me to record a story that I told her, and transcribe it.  "Don't try too hard, jus talk.
