I wrote a blog about this back in December prior to the 16 showings. My husband and I went to the very first showing. Camelhead Rock natural projection landscape was 600 feet wide by 400 feet tall. We were wondering what the cost was and would there be a benefit to the city of Sedona?
What Was The Cost?
I found out that the cost was $110,000 for the "country's largest 3D holiday light show in The Most Beautiful Place on Earth"! I saw first hand the additional traffic that was created. There were 4 shows on the hour for 4 straight days on December 14-17@ 6pm to 9pm.
Was It Worth It?
Sedona Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jennifer Wesselhoff stated the event was a big success in many ways. The spectators enjoyed it (as did I) and so did the business owners. There was a lot of foot traffic up and down the 89A through-out Uptown Sedona. Last year the hotels during this time frame were at 40% capacity and this year, many were completely sold out.
There was additional coverage by the news stations out of Phoenix as well as videos by crews that came up from those TV stations.
My son works at the RV Park where the projection equipment had to be set up so I got to learn about the set up. The twelve large projectors were stacked 3 high at intervals and needed to be 3000 feet away for the projection to work.
It took 3 days to calibrate and test the equipment to make sure everything worked well. Each projector had to be in sync. The mountain had to be mapped and this was not an easy task!
A Phenomenal Production
It was amazing to see this projection on Camelhead Rock. There were scenes of silhouetted dancers moving in and out of the rocks as well as waterfalls, and snowfall as well as Santa Claus and his sleigh moving in and out of simulated caves in the rock. There was also a simulation of a huge full moon!
We did not realize that the sound was going to be projected through a radio station (KYBC 96.3 FM and AM 1600) through your car radio. Music was played at the designated viewing centers throughout Uptown Sedona.
The traffic was very heavy and there was a minor delay with cars coming and leaving from each presentation.
No future committment has been made for future shows. The city is evaluating all the feedback and stats.
