It's as Simple as Re-Framing Your Atti-Tude!

Over the weekend I had lunch with a friend that I've known for many years. She's a successful and upbeat kind of gal and lots of fun to be around. She was troubled about something and wanted to run it by me to get my thoughts - which we've done for each other many times over the years.

Out of the gate she said she was bummed because her income was down about 20% this past year and she wasn't sure how that happened. So we talked about all the usual ideas of  why business goes up or down and just nothing seemed to gel for her.  I then asked her what she was feeling good about and honestly was flabbergasted by what she told me!

She had managed to save over $30K in savings and contributed a substantial amount into her 401K. She then said she's never EVER been able to make that happen in fact she'd be lucky to have an extra $5K in savings, if that. WHAT!  How the heck did you manage that?  That is an awesome turn around for you that you can be very VERY proud of. Wow!  The look on her face was priceless. She had the biggest smile and was feeling really good about what a fantastic year she had created. In fact she said just that - I had a fantastic year and just didn't realize it, did I? Nope you didn't! You were more focused on what you thought wasn't working and ignoring all that was really working - exceedingly well.

Now I'm guessing there isn't anybody out 'there' that hasn't focused on the wrong stuff from time to time. I sure have done that a time or two ... oh heck  let's be honest - a hundred or more! Shoot maybe a thousand or more!!!

The trick is to re-frame your atti-tude and focus on and think only about what IS working and go from there.  And if you get stuck along the way ask a positive friend you trust to be honest with you to help you re-frame your atti-tude. And I might do that ASAP after you're 'aware' you're messing your mind all up and it's not going to create what you really want to create. Be focused on re-framing your tude!  Just Do It!

If all goes well for one week except for that one thing...we tend to focus on that one thing.  Crazy isn't it?

What an inspirational post! Thank you so much. We all need to reset ourselves periodically. Market conditions change but if we have confidence in our skills, we can find ways to succeeed no matter how the market performs. I believe we each control our destiny. Thanks for sharing.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS,CRB ~ sometimes it is just as simple as making a little adjustment in the way we attack the day. No matter what, the attitude we bring to the table is very important and really makes a big difference one way or another

thanks for posting a wonderful story and something we should all be cognizant of everyday. You are a dear friend for pointing those achievements out to her.

We really can change our attitudes by the way we think. Abraham Lincoln may have said it best, "We are about as happy as we make our mind up to be." (paraphrase)

I must confess, the 2018 challenges given to us last week by ActiveRain sure helped me put my own attitude in the right place and mind in gear to kill 2018! Thank you ActiveRain members!

Oh my gosh, so true. I gotta be honest, I'm sick of hearing how tough life has been, is, will be, blah blah blah. Get the hell over it! Grow up. Life marches on, with, or without us. It's how we look at things, and ourselves, that can really change our attitude - and eventually our life. You are a wonderful friend, mentor, and the Top Banana for good reason. Bravo on great advice and for sharing a story that we can relate to from time-to-time. D

Hi Anna- I love this post! And you asked your friend just the right question. You managed to take her mind off of The negative or at least what she thought was so and turn it towards looking at all that she had.

An important reminder to compare the achievements to the goals and objectives before hitting the depressed button. Another way to determine success even if income is 20% less is to measure the amount of time spent to earn your income. So, if I worked 50% less time and earned 20% less working at 100%, should I be concerned, should you? Your attitude determines your altitude is a discipline that IMO leads to success. Great post.

Dear Anna,

But it is so much easier to kvetch about the one that got away than the little one you took home in a bucket for dinner that night.

It's funny how a positive was right there in front of her face but she focused only on the negative. It's a great story & reframing is a great idea. If you write it down & discect it - there's something good to cheer about just like your friend.

It's really hard sometimes to pull yourself out of the pit.

Anna, we can easily spend a lifetime on what is going wrong. The world surrounds us with it.

Re-framing the attitude is a great phrase. It is also a wise choice to make.

Focus on what is good and what is working for you.
