"Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you greater than any obstacle."
-Christian D. Larson
Tuesday evening I had the pleasure of attending a presentation given by two lady friends who took a 500-mile walking trek from St. Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This particular trek is known as the El Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage and around 270,000 people from all over the world participate each year. Here is a link to the History of the Camino de Santiago.
Here is a short description of the experience in their own words:
"During our trek, we had breathtaking mountain scenery as we crossed over the Pyrenees, as well as two other mountain ranges. We encountered all types of terrain during our journey. Along the way we stayed in Albergues and Pilgrim Hostels. We were called Pilgrims and we were very welcome in these inexpensive accommodations. Staying in the Albergues and Hostels, we were required to show our Pilgrim Credentials or 'Pilgrim Passport' as proof we were actual Pilgrims. They would stamp and date it which also acted as documentation of our progress for receiving our Compostela certificate at the end.
Our estimated expenses over these 37 days averaged around 30 - 40 euros per day, which includes Hostels, food and beverage. This is around $50/day in USdollars or $1,850.00 for the entire stay.
We never felt alone , nor did we ever feel afraid. What we experienced on the Camino was so very special and unique. The end result of this kind of walk is not to just arrive in Santiago de Compostela, but to find out more about ourselves, our inner strength and to be inspired during our journey. It truly was a trip of a lifetime."
They also provided a list of excellent resources if anyone in the audience was inclined to take such a journey. For additional information on the trek, visit www.caminodesantiago.me .
I had no idea either of these ladies had such an adventurous spirit. I was impressed!
