Realtor New Year's Resolution - Time to Upgrade

Real Estate Agent with Online Real Estate Agent Training

New Years ResolutionNew Year, New You

Did you make a New Year's resolution for your real estate business?

I don't like resolutions, but I know a lot of people make them.  They may not stick to them, but they make them.

What I want you to think about today is your business.

I review my business practices on a regular basis and make changes when necessary.

The real estate industry is always evolving.

If you aren't constantly trying to improve your business and how you do business and understanding how business is conducted, you will be left with a stagnant business.

A stagnant business means you'll be out of business.

Client Expectations

The expectations of buyers and sellers is high and generally fast-paced.  You need to keep up.  Keeping up may mean you need to change the way you do business.

When you've been in the business for any length of time it's easy to do activities simply because that's the way you've always done them.

Or you're so busy you don't realize that your materials look outdated.

The first of the year is the perfect time to look at your business, your business practices and yourself to see what needs to be "upgraded."

Your Systems

Any activity you do more than twice should be systematized.

This will save you time and mental space in the long run.

How often have you caught yourself asking, "Did I do xyz?"

Free up some brain space and systematize as many aspects of your business as possible.

Buyer and Listing Presentations

The way we do business is constantly changing and your client presentations need to reflect that.

Make sure your presentations tell the client what they can expect from you, what you expect from them and how the process works.

Look at your presentations:

  • Is the information in the right order?
  • Do you need to update your template?
  • Are all of your vendor recommendations current?
  • Have you included testimonials?

Your Online Presence

This one should be a no brainer, but I have to mention it.

When was the last time you Googled yourself?

What comes up?

Just like you Google prospective clients, they will Google you.

Even if it's a referral they want to know a little bit about you.

If nothing comes up, you have an issue.

Make a habit of checking every month.

Update Your Profiles

It's hard to talk about yourself.  We've been raised not to brag or toot our own horn, but that's what you need to do with your various online profiles.

Ask friends, family, colleagues and former clients what they like about you both personally and professionally and go from there.

If you aren't the best writer, find some who is.

Your Marketing Materials

Do your business cards look professional?

Is the picture professional?

Nothing worse than seeing a picture that has clearly been taken at a special event and had other people cropped out.  Have a professional head shot taken.

Do you have a logo?

Does it look current and still reflect how you do business?

How about your Fact Sheets?

Consumers like more white space.  Do yours stand out or could you freshen things up a bit?

Are your direct mail pieces useful?

No one wants your recipes.  They want useful information presented in an easy to read way.

Your goal is to be a resource.

When you're a resource, people look forward to receiving your information.

Equipment and Technology

If it takes your laptop five minutes to boot up, it's probably time for an upgrade.  Unfortunately computers only last about five years.  Bite the bullet and buy a new one.

If you have a digital version of your buyer and listing presentations you may want to present it on a tablet.  It's a good investment.

The demands of the job mean we have to move quickly.

A printer/copier/scanner is a necessity.  The prices are low enough now that it's crazy not to have one.

Electronic signatures are here to stay.  Thank goodness!  If you aren't comfortable with them, get comfortable.

There's an App for everything.  Take some time each month to see what Apps can make your life easier.

Update Your Look

I know it's not fair, but people will judge you by the way you look.  It's human nature.

In real estate how you look could make the difference between a client working with you or walking away.

I know it sounds petty, but it's reality

You are your brand.

What does your style of dress tell someone who doesn't know you?

Do you look like someone they can trust to sell their largest investment?

It could be time for a makeover.

If you've had the same haircut and makeup since high school, it's time.

Ask a close friend for their honest opinion.  Or better yet, make an appointment with a personal shopper and see what transformation looks like.

Upgrade Your Mindset

Your thoughts are powerful.

What you tell yourself will happen...good or bad.

Be aware of what's going on in your head.  When your thoughts turn negative, find a way to turn things around.

Never think you know everything.  The second that happens you and your business will suffer.

No matter how much you know, you can always learn something new.

Make it a goal to learn something new everyday.

Never think your way is the only way.  Be open to trying something new or doing what you currently do in a new way.

If a new way of doing something scares you, dedicate just 15 minutes to it a day and I guarantee you will master it in time.

My Mom Has Upgraded

Three years ago I told my mom that she needed to be on Facebook.

This would allow her to keep up with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren around the country.

Technology scares her.

We had to pry her flip phone from her hands.

She was frustrated with Facebook at first.

Logging on wasn't easy.

But in time she got the hang of it and now she loves it.

She'll be 90 years old this June.

If she can upgrade at 90, so can you.

Be prosperous!
