We Should Encourage Contrarians In Our Midst!

Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants

It is important that the Active Rain community does not become an echo chamber, where we all agree and repeat the same thoughts and ideas.  We cannot grow or expand that way.  The video clip above (from Monty Python's film, Life of Brian) brilliantly illustrates the echo chamber principle.

An echo chamber as defined by Wiki "is a metaphorical description of a situation in which information, ideas, or beliefs are amplified or reinforced by communication and repetition inside a defined system. Inside a figurative echo chamber, official sources often go unquestioned and different or competing views are censored, disallowed, or otherwise underrepresented".

Recently companies are facing lawsuits for firing employees who have dared to challenge the echo chamber within their organization.   Although the employees did so courteously and without insulting anyone, they were promptly dismissed, so that they would not affect the morale of the company.

“Picture all experts as if they were mammals. Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence”

-Christopher Hitchens, Letters to a Young Countrarian.

Think of how little we would have evolved as humans, if we maintained our echo chambers.  At one time, people were banished or put to death for challenging the then experts saying that the Earth is flat, man would never fly, let alone communicate around the world by just pressing the "send" button on a flat screen!

It took contrarians to come up with these advances. As Albert Einstein said,

"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them."

Personally, we love contrarian thinking, we feel it stretches our minds to explore many forms of thinking.  We often engage in conversation with friends when it come to conclusions in challenging each other to push the conventional walls that we may have become accustomed to.

Mel Ahrens, MBA, Kelly Right Real Estate I appreciated the use of the word "robust".  Many times people get offended when the atmosphere gets tense, which is part of the creative process, this whole fear of offending has gone off the rails, so many are afraid to say something that "may" offend someone else!"  A

During 2005 and 2006 conventional wisdom says the home prices are over valued. I suggested to investors to hold purchase other than personal use.  Other realtors criticized my cautious style as being negative. Those who purchased for investment all defaulted and realtors who criticize me a few lost their licenses and disappeared.

Tim Maitski I agreee with you.  I have had the experience where I have expressed an opinion in the nicest manner I could think of, and it came back to me.  This person eveen sought the advice of their echo chamber and deleted my comment.  I found it uproarious.

Thank goodness you have that  urge to pick apart ideas.  It is definitely a healthy one, because it makes one more objective.  I think people start screaming when you are on to their agenda, and they hate that you found them out.  A

Glad you like the video clip, it is one of our favorites.  A

Always good to consider the other viewpoint. Debating is good for you especially whenh you are challenged to take the opposing view. It stretches your mind, and your ability to express yourself. And it may just encourage you to listen to another viewpoint and find a new way. Great post.

Being "contrary" and being able to discuss a topic or idea are different in my mind. A good friend of mine was on a debating team and could argue any topic equally well from both idea. Some people just like being "on the other side".

Hella Mitschke Rothwell in European schools, one is thought to think in different paradigms, and not be stuck in just one.  If we all had the same mindset, nothing would be new, nothing would be different.  I have seen it here, which is one of the reasons, we have lost members.  A

Thrilled to find you addressing the echo chamber phenomenon, but contrariness is the pendulum swinging in the total opposite direction.   As a practical matter, I doubt whether this community could survive folks being contrary for its own sake.

However, rather than being contrary, members engaging in critical thinking, would be more intellectually honest and productive in a group environment.

I totally dig that you raised this subject!

Brian L. Sirota, Esq. Echo Chamber needs to be shaken up, there is so much of it. I agree with you on the concept of critical thinking which involves the bigger picture. It is hard for many to look at the bigger picture even though that is where the answer often are.  Critical thinking means letting go of one's agendas and only then do you an intellectual honest, productive results.  I think we speak the same language,  Thank you for your input,  I always appreciate it.  A

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel - I call it diversity of thought. The more you are around people of different backgrounds you generally get a lot of rich information to absorb and act upon...of course you have to have an open mind and willing to put preconceived notions aside.
