If you live in the Northeast or Midwest...or anywhere that gets a lot of snow (like we do in here in New York), this post may seem out of place because it's snow season. And, I can't wait until the snow is done and spring gets here.
But, spring will come again and knowing this information to prepare for spring will help you. Or if you are in a warm climate (and yes, I'm so jealous of you now), Lately, I've been learning a lot about lawns (as I have a client in Fairfield CT who fertilizes lawns and makes sure they look their best.
In the process, I've learned that many of us unknowingly make mistakes when watering lawns.
Many of us over water our lawns. Not only does this waste water, but it's bad for the lawn. It's actually easier to ruin your lawn from over watering than under watering. Generally twice per week max is sufficient (and less if it's rained).
And, many of us have the wrong type of sprinkler you system (you want a pulsating one, not an oscillating sprinkler...unless it's a new lawn in which case you would use an oscillating one and then graduate to a pulsating one once the roots are more established.
The other frequent issue is that we only water the surface of the lawn, rather than allowing the water to penetrate deep enough into the soil (it should go to a depth of 6 inches in the ground...that's what's best for the roots...that's where most of the water is absorbed (not in the blades).
I think most of us know that watering in the middle of the day (especially if it's hot) is a no no. Watering early in the morning is best.
