I'm so glad she called to chat
- The Activerain challenge to call another member
- Debe called me and we had a great conversation
- If you are afraid to call someone, start by calling Debe
Yesterday on my way out the door my cell phone rang. I looked at the phone number and saw that it was from Charlotte North Carolina.
The first thing that crossed my mind was "That can't be Debe Maxwell, can it?" Her name crossed my mind because I had left a comment on one of her posts earlier in the morning. But other than a few comments here and there, I never really had any interaction with her.
When I answered and she introduced herself, I thought I was maybe dreaming. I couldn't believe someone like Debe Maxwell would be calling me. What an honor. I just don't see myself in the same league. She said that she was fulfilling an Activerain challenge put out there by Lynn Friedman. The challenge was to pick up the phone and call another Activerain member.
I was kind of nervous too. I perceived Debe as being a very prim and proper southern lady and I was afraid we wouldn't have very much in common to talk about. I'm a transplanted Yankee who never learned many of the southern social graces.
I told her that I'd call her later in the afternoon because I was on my way to show a few homes.
Did my background research
When I got back from my showings, I thought it would be a good idea to do a little background research on Debe before I called her back. I'm not a very good conversationalist so I figured I could find some things about her to talk about. She seems like a very successful Realtor who knows her stuff.
So I called her back and one topic led to another. Before you know it, an hour and a half had gone by.
I really enjoyed the conversation. We discussed sports, family and business.
I now have some context for her.
I can't wait to see her in person next Saturday at a local meetup here in Atlanta.
Calling a stranger is awkward but very rewarding
I've always wanted to pick up the phone and call some members but I never do. I feel awkward. What if they don't want to talk to me? Maybe they don't think much of me? What am I going to talk about?
So here's my tip.
Start by calling Debe Maxwell. She is so easy to talk with and will make you feel at home.
