Beach to Bay

In our quest to try and stay in shape(off and on for years) we are constantly looking for fun ways to enhance our exercise goals...so we combine exercise, friends and small vacations(weekend getaways) to keep our interest in staying fit alive.  A few years ago we formed a team and needed a name for the team.  Our friend Maureen who lives in New Braunfels, TX(a very German community)...came up with the Wurst Runners...Wurst for Wurstfest(German festival) and of course a tongue and cheek because we are a mixed bag of runners.  Our runners are ages early & late 30's, early 40's and mid/late 50's...so you see the mixed bag:).  We certainly were not first but at least we were not last...the funniest part for us is the many 6th graders that pass us...makes you really feel old and out of shape but at least we showed up and finished.   It's lots of fun to share with 1700+ other teams...it is a sea of people.

This past weekend we ran in the Beach to Bay Relay Marathon...held in Corpus Christi, TX for the 33rd time... it literally starts on the Beach on Mustang Island and is broken into 6 legs....each leg is about 4.37 miles and they each have their own challenges.  The event starts at 7 am on the beach 2.18 miles out and 2.18 miles back and hands off to the next runner...second leg runs 4.37 miles from the beach to the base of the JFK bridge...third leg is the JFK bridge(straight up) and then the long causeway 4.37 miles...no water stations except at the start and finish...4th leg is the longest 4.74 and it winds through the Naval Air Station and the last 2 legs are run along the shoreline of Corpus Christi....very windy and usually very hot by the time the last 2 legs are starting....at least for our team.

We lucked out the weather was perfect for running...cloudy and cooooool...yippee.  We finished under 5 hours...the slow runners were excited and the faster runners were excited(we beat our last yrs time 5 hrs 13 minutes.)

In the morning, we always wonder who's idea it was to sign up, but in the afternoon we are so glad we did it and that it is over....for this year....see you there next year.
