Dial It Out. . .Sacramento!

For Sacramentans not already aware, there is a big change that will affect our dialing habits beginning on February 10th.

What is it, you ask?  It is a change caused by the addition of the 279 area code to our existing Sacramento 916 which had been solely servicing our vicinity.

Because of this area code 279 addition, it will become necessary for those of with a 916 or 279 area code to dial “1” plus the area code, when making calls.  This applies even if you have a 916 area code, and are dialing another 916 number.  It affects landline calls, as well as cellphones.

More information about these changes to the Greater Sacramento 916 area code, go to www.cpuc.ca.gov/916areacode.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat - Great job getting this info out to your network.  Because Sacramento has not been through this, there will be confusion and frustration for a short while. In SoCal, we went through this 5 times while I lived there!  After the first change, it is much easier to deal with.

We had that happen some years back here in the Denver area.  They added a 720 area code to the 303.  It was confusing for a while and many people had to alter their advertising locally to include the area code.

Hi Myrl... so far in Charlotte it's remained 704... but cell phones started a 980 "area" code a few years ago. I lived through that in NYC years ago. The 212 code everyone new extended to another for the outer-boroughs and now I believe there is a third code.

I went through this when I lived in Orange County. It wasn't a big deal for me  because habitually I have entered all phone numbers with the area code in my cellphone. Not to mention, I routinely call 916 when I'm in Hawaii. LOL. I sell a lot of real estate in Yolo County, too, so I'm always dialing another area code for that.

But for people who have lived in Sacramento for their entire lives and are attached to the 916, I can see it being a huge problem. I even have a 916 t-shirt.

I think that is a positive sign of growth for the city and the change should be welcome.

We've got a lot of area codes that service our area.  703, 571, 540.  Usually, we just need to dial the area code and number though.  But I remember when dialing the area code became a thing.  It was a big adjustment.

Myrl we have two area codes and have had to do that for a while now.  I have to admit it is a bit aggravating.

I have always wished there was some Rhyme or Reason to area codes. I think it would be cool to have the first two numbers designate the state and the last one the city right now it's a hodgepodge of numbers that don't make much sense. I will get off my soapbox Myrl Jeffcoat I promise...

Myrl,

I remember when this started happening in Los Angeles.  We had 213, then they added 310.  Then they were going to add more to the 310 area, and some local gov person ran their election promising that 310 would stay intact and they would add on a new code to Pasadena instead.  He won the election and kept 310 intact.  A

We have 4 area codes and only one requires dialing 1, eventually you should not have to dial a 1. GOod info for people who call Sacramento!

Myrl, we went through this a few years ago. It takes a little getting use to but, it is fine. The biggest think is changing all your marketing if you're a business owner.
