What is the Perfect Neighborhood?

By

The California Association of REALTORS® shared this easy to understand infographic, compiled from data shared by the National Association of REALTORS® collected from the 2017 National Community and Transportation Preference survey.

Infographic from California Assn. of Realtors

These statistics are not surprising; various communities and styles of living suit people at different stages of their lives.

What is interesting to me, and what I see every day in the San Francisco Bay Area is the high percentage of people who value walkability of neighborhoods, be they suburban or urban.

I grew up in the 1950s, in a suburban bedroom community in the Bay Area, with a mother who loved to walk. When we would take walks, it wasn't unusual for some car drive to stop and ask if we'd like a ride! One rarely saw anyone walking in the neighborhood, aside from school children walking to a school bus stop.

The word is out -- getting out of our cars when possible and walking is good for one, and good for the environment, too.

Great data and I always appreciate the east of digesting information in an infographic. We see the numbers play out in our business. Most of our boomer clients want suburban or rual areas.

Good morning, Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - infographics are simple, visually appealing ways to get data. KCM uses them effectively, as does our CAR. I like seeing the trend towards walkable communities - time to ditch the car for each and every errand!

Hello Michael J. Perry - having a dog is great for getting one out and about on foot. I bet you and your lab have great times together.

Yes, we work the opposite niche, nonetheless, happy to see we both have trends that work for us.

Great infographic from the NAR, Lottie. In general,  I don't think we do enough to use materials like this so available to us.

You often do a great job of sharing KCM infographics, Nina Hollander and making them pertinent to your neighborhoods.

Good afternoon Lottie - it certainly appears to be a generational thing.  As we get older our desires also change.  I am doing more walking now.

I saw that graphic the other day, Lottie, and I had a different take on it. The percentages, between 50% nd 60%. It says to me that about half of the people surveyed have a different preference. So I figured so what? I didn't see that it warranted a press release.

As for walking, people SAY they want to walk but do they actually do it? I know you do, you're an avid hiker, but most other people? They won't even walk 2 blocks to the grocery store. People are pretty lazy.

I definitely see a preference for walkable neighborhoods up and down the Peninsula, Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents Maybe the weather helps--not too hot in the summer; mild in the winter--and I suspect our traffic congestion prompts a lot of people to ditch the car. In San Francisco, the preference for walking is even more extreme.

Hi Lottie: Also, public transportation in San Francisco is really easy to use, you don't need a car. I bet if the survey was done in San Francisco, the walkability preference would be 95%. Also, I can admit to asking my husband to get behind me and push me up a hill.

Hi George Souto - not surprising to see young families wanting the SFH and space, but even in that group, I find a lot of people want to be able to walk to Starbucks, or push the baby stroller to a nearby park.

You are like one of my brothers, William Feela - Elko Nevada is where his company is located, but he lives 10 miles away, 3 miles up a private dirt road. From his house one can't see another property. It's the polar opposite of where I live--both are great. Dan's place

It's certainly a challenge in L.A. to find walkable neighborhoods and they are, needless to say among the more expensive neighborhoods. Now, because of our growing metro rail system, homes close to metro stations are becoming equally hard to find.

That's what I'm seeing, too, Jane Peters - people are beginning to recognize public transit has advantages, and want to live close. Where do you think this trend will be in 10 years? 20 years?

Well once the routes are completed that will be it. But in L.A. it is obviously more important to live close to rail transportation so those areas will remain hot. We do not take buses here.
