The Spirit of Vilfredo Pareto Is Alive And Well On AR

"I can accept failure.  Everyone fails at something. But I cannot accept not trying."
-Michael Jordan

I'm a competitive person and driven by specific goals so, as I play in The Rain, I do watch my point count.  I know the points don't really mean anything, but it's something to acknowledge a contribution to the platform.

I've been pleased with my upward movement on the Leaderboard and currently sit at #10 in Washington State.  I am number one in my area by quite a wide margin.

As I was looking at the Leaderboard for Washington today, I began wondering how far up I could realistically go. My conclusion is I should eventually be able to get into and hold the #3 position in the state.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®,CRS, sits comfortably in the #1 position.  I don't see that changing.
Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD sits in the #2 position, and I don't see that changing either.

That gives me a realistic goal to reach the #3 position in Washington State.  I'm not usually good at being satisfied with third place, but if I have to eat dust, I'm proud to eat Paul and Debb's dust.  Their dust is full of wisdom and knowledge to ingest and digest along the way.

Beyond the leaders, I was wondering what percentage of the AR membership is active.  In my limited research, it appears the spirit of Vilfredo Federico Damaso Pareto is alive and well.  You are no doubt familiar with the the 80/20 rule known as the Pareto Principle.  ActiveRain is no exception when it comes to this rule.   Over 80% of the 9544 members registered in Washington State did nothing more than sign-up and get a few profile points. With very few exceptions, they didn't even upload a picture.   A few in the upper portion of the 80% actually posted a blog or two, but some of them date back to 2006 - 2008.

The membership numbers on ActiveRain are impressive.  Less impressive is the reality of how many members are actually active and contributing to the forum on any kind of a regular basis.  Oh how I wish there was some way to drop the inactive members and get our membership numbers down to a more meaningful level.

Hello Realty - Santa Fe, NM

I wonder what Vilfredo Pareto would say today in our world of mass distraction given all the tools we have to communicate and "work" in our lives. I suspect it would be even over a 90/10 rule given we only have 24 hours in a day. I used to look at the leaderboard stats for Santa Fe and New Mexico and then remember our community is known as the "city different" and our state is the land of enchantment. I was troubled by your suggestion of removing "inactive" members. IMHO, it is not about the number of members that makes Activerain important. It is about the relationships that people build in the rain and beyond. Life is more than an old magazine. It happens to people. I give rainers the benefit of the doubt and trust they are doing the best they can given our business today and their lives.

Good morning, Carol Williams potential future members see 300,000+/- members and it becomes a "follow the leader' game.... if 300k people work on this platform, it must be worth it!!  that's the thinking.... and I can understand it.... if that number became 3,000, it's not so exciting to an agent thinking about joining.

That principle applies to probably pretty much every industry out there - there are doers, there are leaders and there are followers. AR is no exception.

Good morning Sally K. & David L. Hanson .  Yes, I do enjoy writing as you do.  It makes it easy for us.  I suppose lots of people sign up because they are told they should.  When I was an active agent, my primary blog (not AR) generated 75% of my new business.  If more agents grasped that they might take it more seriously.

Good morning Wayne Martin .  You are absolutely right.  It is more like 90/10.  I guess that is pretty well documented by NAR's statistics that 87% of new agents fail within the first two years.   Have a great day!

Good morning Dorie Dillard   Yes, Wayne IS right.  It is more like 90/10.  We never really know who is reading out blogs, do we?  When I was blogging, I tracked  75% of my new business to my blog and website.  The rest were repeat clients and referrals. Blogging builds credibility and that matters!!!

Hi Emily Medvec Santa Fe NM .   I hear ya, Emily.  I think a lot of people sign-up because they are told they should but don't really have any real desire to do so.  The membership numbers don't really mean anything.  It doesn't really matter one way or the other.  I just wish it was more meaningful.  And, you are absolutely right that it is about the relationships with those who are here and engaged.  Thanks for stopping by today and sharing your thoughts.  Happy Sunday!

Hi Barbara Todaro .  Yes, that's exactly it.  I suspect many are told they should join and don't really want to and don't see the true value. I guess that's ok.  Better for the rest of us.  But the membership numbers mean nothing.   Oh well.  Happy Sunday!

You are all winners and regardless of your standing have something special to offer. I love seeing what each one of you has to say. There is a small percentage of members that actively participate here but that small group contributes excellent value.

Carol, I felt that way, too, when I first started out and even for a long time after.  Paring the non-contributors would be a good way to start.  But, you might notice that I have been out for a while.  Just because I wasn't blogging, didn't mean I wasn't taking in some of the best bloggers around.  (I will try to be better now!)

Carol, I've often speculated about the percentage of members that are "active".  I am sure what you see in your state is representative of all.  I'd be happy in #3 position as well given those that hold #2 and #1 positions.
