Did you ever spend time at Alcatraz? I have: Confessions of a Beverly Hills Realtor Endre Barath,Jr.
Honest, I have spent time at Alcatraz. Three times to be exact! I have been in the same Cell Block where James “Whitey” Bulger stayed. Well it is not what you think…
The first time Diane and I went there, was on our first visit to San Francisco. I wanted to check out the “Rock” that was made famous by their infamous and hardened residents of the likes of the “Birdman of Alcatraz”. BTW if you never saw the movie it is worth looking for it, Burt Lancaster played the role of the Birdman of Alcatraz. (The movie debut was in 1962)
The second time we went to Alcatraz, was with my parents. My dad wanted to go to Alcatraz, since he also saw the Burt Lancaster movie as well as “Escape from Alcatraz” where Clint Eastwood played one of the Escapees: Frank Lee Morris (The movie came out in 1979 and ironically Morris and the other two inmates escaped in 1962)
My third visit was just recently, when my friend and his wife were visiting from Ireland and he wanted to go to Alcatraz as well. Interestingly each visit had exposed us to new and interesting information.
This time around the technology has improved as well. Just to give you an idea, when we went for our first visit, we had a guided tour by the Docents of Alcatraz (some of the docents were actual prisoners who have returned to make a living giving the tours. On our second visit we had received portable cassette players and this last time we had an audio tour which we could stop and activate with a button to move at our own pace. Keep in mind these are now available in Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
All I could think of was the latest book I just read by Dan Brown “Origin”, i.e.: if there will be a fourth trip in the horizon for us, I anticipate it will be with Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the tour guide.
If you ever visit San Francisco and you are looking to learn a bit of history of the Penal System and the history of the US prison system and its more infamous residents who spent time on the Rock, then Alcatraz is a must visit destination for you.
Just on a side note, while you are there, please enjoy the various piers and check out the Sea Lions as well as have some great food that are conveniently close by.
Now let me leave you with a quote from one of the more famous residents of recent past:
“…Looking back, Alcatraz was pretty good. You may be surprised to find that I look back at Alcatraz with a sense of nostalgia. My life today would break most men. After 16 years on America's Most Wanted list and living a quiet life on the California coast, I'm back in a cold isolation cell and reflect often back to those years on the Rock. Even though the San Francisco was close, we always felt so far removed from everything….” (Michael Esslinger quoting Whitey Bulger)
On a side note this picture was taken while Whitey Bulger was hiding in plain site from the FBI I , find it ironic in light of what is going on in our current Political Investigation, since Whitey visited Alcatraz as a tourist and lived in Santa Monica, CA for almost 20 years and the FBI continued looking for him... I enjoyed reading this article with a few pictures of him in my back yard...
