Inane Answering Message Day is January 30.

Does anyone leave a voice message anymore? With texts, email, and any number of ways to let someone know that you have a message for them, sometimes I wonder if voicemail is going the way of Rolodexes. answering a phone(remember them?)

Often when someone tries to reach me and gets my outgoing message, they will instead text me.

They may text me that they left me a message or text me with whatever message they wanted to leave.

That’s quite all right with me.

Nevertheless, your outgoing message is an integral part of the impression you’re making to a potential client, peer, whomever.

So, have you checked yours lately?

OOPS

I did as I was writing this post, and discovered that in one of the many iPhone updates and for any number of reasons, my outgoing message had reverted to the default iPhone message.

I have a few pet peeves of mine...purely personal...that drive me bat-crazy with outgoing messages. *

~The outgoing “I love me” message that takes forever to listen to

~The outgoing message that tries to tell me the marketing report for the local area or 3 reasons why I should stage now, or the current mortgage rates for the entire country...you get my drift

~and my all-time BIG PET PEEVE-

“Please leave your name and number and I will call you back at MY earliest convenience.”

Find out more about voicemail greetings.

And just for fun, I love this outgoing message by Samuel L Jackson!  You can actually download it for your own use.

*This relates solely to outgoing business messages. Your personal messages are fair game.

I recently updated my outgoing message to encourage texts for a faster response.  Much easier to discreetly answer those while out with other clients.

A voicemail, email or text gets the job done, however, please, pick one and only one unless there's blood involved. In that case I recommend 9-1-1.

Oh I do dislike hearing long winded outgoing messages...S L Jacksons's is funny.

My message is short and sweet...and if they don't leave a message, I will not call back.  A

Kathy,

LOL! I always wondered at my earliest convenience, great customer service. Mine is long because I leave office hours on and days off.

I've had that "revert back to default message" thing happen and it's so frustrating. It's a good idea to listen to our own message now and then. Thanks for the reminder to check mine!

Kathy all forms of messages seem to have issues.  My big pet peeve about text messages is people who text you for the first time and do not state their name.  How the heck are you suppose to know who it is?  I don't memorize phone numbers.

I was on the other line when someone called this afternoon. He didn't leave a message. I hate it when people do that. Instead he emailed right after he got off the phone. With my phone in one hand, and one hand on the keyboard, I typed a message to let him know I would be with him shortly.

I'm not sure I want to work with someone that sounds so impatient, but I will give it a shot and see how it goes. Maybe he's not really that impatient of a person. Time will tell.

I'm with you on this subject Kathy.  I called a gal the other day and I couldn't believe how long the message was and how many things she was trying to jam in here message. Ugh.

There is no question that the advent of texting has changed the way we communicate and stay in touch.  I still remember one answering machine message, "This is 555-5555, I'm much more than a number, talk to me."  And, then there was, "This is the 555-5555.  Leave a message, I promise if you are not the IRS or my boyfriend's ex-wife, I will return your call."

Sally K. & David L. Hanson lots of ways to leave a message these days.

Joe Pryor Samuel L: Jackson is one of those actors who can read most anything and I would be right there to listen.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I don't either. My thought is that I'm not going to second guess what's in their mind.

Yolanda Cordova-Gilbert you know your clients so that information is no doubt what they need.  And, i'll bet it's not that long.

LOL Oh I'm guilty of that. I texted James Dray today and he said "who is this?"

Debbie Laity You know, I think it's more a function of the times we live in. Instant gratification, instant response.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS,CRB it's bad enough we get the long outgoing message from big box corporations. Just let me leave my message!

Myrl Jeffcoat I love the ones that make you think that a real person answered but then they have you leave a message.

Hi Kathy Streib, I can not stand long greetings, especially the ones who say the same greeting in a couple of languages.  If someone calls and doesn't leave a message, they won't be getting a call back.
