2018 Decorating Trends for Your Home

Every year, top designers weigh in on what they think will be raising temperatures in home trends for the coming year. If home updates are on your list of New Year’s Resolutions, then here are a few “on trend” design features to consider.

Purple Takes Point

Nearly every little girl, at some point or another, begged for purple painted walls in her bedroom. Purple is not just for little girls anymore! Pantone® has brought this royal color prime time with the Color of the Year for 2018: Ultra Violet.

Not quite ready to paint your walls a passionate purple? Have no fear. There are plenty of ways to bring this vibrant color into your home’s palette. Try throw pillows, accent rugs, frames decorated with purple crystals, chair covers, artwork, or other decorative items.

Another way to enjoy your love of purple is to add it to your landscaping! Irises, verbena, clematis, wisteria, sage, lilac, heather, and, of course, petunias, all come in vibrant shades of purple. Don’t forget to cut a few and bring them indoors – you can enjoy the colors and the scents!

Brass is Fitting

Brass fixtures have been making a comeback in recent years, but experts suggest that 2018 will be THE year for brass. Brass light fixtures are especially popular with designers, but faucets, door handles, drawer pulls, and all sorts of brass accents can bring this bright and beautiful metal into your home décor.

If you are not quite ready to invest in expensive brass fixtures, there are plenty of economical ways to decorate with brass. Incorporate brass into such items as picture frames, table lamps, or a brass bowl filled with fruit on the kitchen island. Let your imagination run wild!

Color your Cabinets

Think your only options for kitchen cabinets are wood stains and white/gray/black paint? Think again! This year, color comes to cabinets with the most popular choices being variations of blue and green. Natural wood is also popular with designers, with bold color floors, ceilings, or countertops.

If you don’t think you can commit to painting all your cabinets, bring a pop of color to white cabinets by painting the inside of selected cabinets, and finish with glass-front doors to let the color shine through.

Send in the Circle

Geometric shapes have been popular for years, but in 2018, the circle will make its latest entrée into modern décor. Look for curvy couches, circular accent tables, and even patterned wallpaper and other accents to show off the timeless versatility of the circle.

You can start small with pillows and other tasteful accents to incorporate circles into your home decorating. Circles act to soften the harsh angles of linear geometric patterns.

The Bottom Line

There are numerous ways you can make small, yet tasteful, changes to stay on top of changing design concepts without breaking your budget. Pinterest can be a great resource for ideas and inspiration, as well as your choice of hundreds of home decorating websites.
