How would you like to wake up to panoramic views of the skyline as the sun begins to peek through your bedroom windows? Baby Boomers are flocking back to the city. It’s a surprise to see couples with a big 4 bedroom house,
and acreage in the suburbs downsizing to1300 square feet of city living. They feel that they’ve done their due diligence, given the kids a solid start, and now it’s time for less maintenance and more mingling.
It’s not just Boomers, but young professionals are opting for urban living as they start their careers. In 2017, 1400 downtown units were sold, there must be some exciting benefits:
- Less dependent on driving. You can walk almost anywhere (weather permitting). Some go carless, Ubering (Yes, it is now a verb) or renting by the hour if they need it. Bike rental is an alternative, as is public transportation.
- NO MAINTENANCE! I’ve shown many couples urban pads where he glances at her growling, “I’m tired of shoveling, raking, cleaning gutters.” Single family homes require work, inside and out. At some point, many couples want less or delegate it to someone else.
- Lock and load the bags off to the airport. When you don’t have to worry about tending the yard, picking up mail, walking the dog, all you have to do is turn down the heat and pack your bags. The concierge can hold your mail, and your apartment will be cozy and waiting for you hen you come back.
- Community. Keeping a social life through the winter in Minnesota is a chilly business. Suburban neighbors wave Hello/Goodbye as they roll into their garages in October, you won’t see them again till spring. The holidays are usually subzero, or snowed in. This is why we see so many movies. You have to drag snow boots along and you could get stuck in a drift. Having friends an elevator stop away, or even a couple blocks makes a Minneapolis social life a dream come true.
The ultimate low maintenance is a new construction apartment with wide open spaces, ginormous windows, and views from every angle. If that sounds like something you’d like to wake up to check out The Portland Tower or The Legacy. Portland Tower is already mostly sold with a few units still available. Seven units are ready and waiting, and another 22 are available with your personal choices. Layouts range from 2 to 4 bedrooms, two baths 1472 square feet + one balcony to 1675 square feet, two balconies, and garage. You can’t beat the views, especially if you’re a fan.
