If you live in Allen, Texas as I have since 2005, you cannot keep yourself from being excited about all of the growth that is taking place in this community. Allen is an affluent suburb that is located just north of Dallas with just under 100,000 residents (99,179), that was recently named by MONEY magazine as the #2 Best Place to Live in the U.S. The city has worked to actively create and promote various economic growth and opportunities within the community. In 2017 alone, there was an estimated $1.6 billion of new development that broke ground, and much more coming in 2018 and beyond. Here are some of the things planned in Allen that will bring excitement, jobs, opportunities and value to our Allen community.
1. A number of technology and cybersecurity companies have chosen Allen and have committed to building new facilities and bringing hundreds of jobs with them. NetScout Systems, Inc. has broken ground and their new 145,000 square feet facility is under construction and will employ 500 or more people. Data company CyrusOne has recently purchased 66 acres of land with the intention to build an expected $1 billion data campus in Allen in the coming years.
2. The new Watters Creek Convention Center is under construction in Allen as well. It is currently planned to open in January 2019 with the following features. There will be 90,000 square feet of flexible convention, ballroom and meeting space. It will also feature a beautiful outdoor patio and courtyard for hosting events also. There will be a celebrity chef restaurant that will feature private dining rooms and a Delta Hotel by Marriott with 300 rooms. Connected to the convention center and hotel will be a 6-story parking garage that will accommodate 1,000 vehicles.
3. Allen ISD and Collin College are partnering on a new Collin College Technical Campus in Allen. The new 360,000 square foot facility will be built adjacent to the new Allen ISD STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) Center that is currently under construction. Allen ISD is funding 40,000 square feet of the new technical campus for use by their dual credit program students. The new technical center will specialize in high-demand technical workforce education.
4. Last but certainly not least, is the new mixed-use development named The Strand that will be coming to the area in Allen at Alma and Highway 121. The Strand is being developed by Hines which also developed The Galleria in Dallas. According to Drew Steffen who is the Managing Director for Hines ” With The Strand, we are creating a new center complete with unique urban walkability, activated public space, parks and plazas and unparalleled on-site amenities, Visitors will experience The Strand as an urban fabric that’s seamlessly woven with the natural landscape” The estimate is that the development will have 3.5M or more square feet planned. I will be writing and sharing more details about The Strand in the near future.
