“Water and Power: A California Heist.”

By
Real Estate Agent

I had difficulty sleeping in the wee hours of this morning, so I switched on the television and tapped into Netflix streaming.  The title I chose was “Water and Power: A California Heist.”  It is a National Geographic production which reveals how a handful of water barons managed to gain control of our state’s public water resources and privatize them.

Because my own local water company (Golden State Water) recently proposed 41% in rate hikes over the next couple years, and local citizens had concerns because of it, I found it timely to watch.

I think all Californians might find it educational to view.  Here’s a link to the trailer as provided by National Geographic.

Myrl their is no life without water.

That rate increase is unreasonable in my opinion.

This is a story that has been told all across United States and there are some people in the state of Washington, in government, who are trying to steal our water and our rights to it Myrl Jeffcoat.  We pay more for water than we do for gasoline...

Good morning Myrl Jeffcoat ,

I read your post when you wrote it this week and so glad that Kathy Streib featured it in her "Ah Ha" moments for the week. It's a topic we all need to be concerned with!

Myrl Jeffcoat this reminds me of the movie Chinatown about California Water Barrons. Sometimes movies are closer to reality than we see. People need to not take wate for granted and pay attention to the who/how/what delivers water to their faucets! Good education post. Thanks to Kathy Streib I found it.

Good morning Meryl. Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan, its water source, is looking better. Water is cheap! Enjoy your day!

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat - My mind immediately went to "Chinatown". This is good for CA residents to check out!

Sedona and other municipalities have private water companies. We do not have any public water companies the two that serve us are private.

Hi Myrl

I will definitely be checking out the link!! I never saw the movie Chinatown but will have to now!! Our local water authorities just released the "good news" that our water rates will not be going up, for the moment, as dramatically as had been projected and approved, at least for now.

I started reading about the water barons of California when I visited Mono Lake. They do control everything when they control the water. And they control the water. Even today.

Myrl Jeffcoat

You have peaked my curiosity! This something to definitely pay attention to, makes notes, do your own research, and stay on top of the water issue in the news. There seems to be a great deal of disharmony and trust issues with people in power. This is not the time to be silent. I read the links... gave me the chills. I know of the movie Chinatown but never watched it.

I think everyone should watch and learn. I have a feeling this isn't just a concern for the people of California. Keep us posted with any additional information.

It sounds like it is an essential watch. The continued privatization could cause problems down the line. Thank you for sharing.
