One of the best things you can do for your website is to periodically go back and optimize some of your articles. I generally start with my top articles (I look at my Top 10 articles).
I look for opportunities where I'm doing well...and where I think I can do better.
Truthfully, I should be doing this more often. I told myself that I will optimize 1 post per week for the month of February and March. This week I decided to work on What is Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring (LVP)?
This article is already doing well. It's getting 4,700 clicks/month. But, I think it can do better. Why do I think that? Well because I'm only ranked #6 or #7 (on average 6.7 per google search console results). Even if you don't have google search console, you can figure this out just by doing a google search for your term (ideally in incognito mode).
So, this term gets a lot of searches, and my click through rate is only 3.3% on the most common key words used (LVP flooring). So my goal is to improve my ranking and my click through rate.
So here's what I did to look for ideas (my process will be to improve the post and improve the backlink profile).
- Checked the search terms used most often on the post (via google search console..sorted by impressions). Now, I have 5 sets of key words to focus on.
- Looked at my article to see what I thought could be improved
- Did a search for the term to see the other articles that came up for ideas (including how to improve meta description (i.e. the words used to improve click through).
- Looked on the google results page to see the other related searches people are looking for (they just pop up on google).
From there, I figured I'd do the following (some done/some need to be done):
- Add in some sections based on similar searches (makes my article meatier and hopefully will come up for more search terms). Done.
- Add in some more pictures and alt tags for those pictures (based on the 5 most popular key word searches and the new sections I added). Done (easiest part)
- Wrote article on Active Rain with backlink (i.e. this article). Done.
- Gathered ideas for future guest posts/backlink article topics (will do at least 1 this week...probably 2 more in future...only so much I can do at once).
- Will create a new pin for Pinterest (simple...hope to do mid week).
- Still need to optimize the meta description (hopefully tomorrow).
FYI, this is the meta description (the part after the date):
So, I'm pretty sure I can improve that.
I hope to do one of these articles a week for next 8 weeks.
I hope these suggestions are helpful. And, by the way, I do offer some coaching sessions over the phone, if you ever have a need. Happy to just do a 1 or 2 hour sessions if you just need a bit of guidance.
In the meantime, hopefully, this will help you get on your way. And, if you're interested in doing more with Pinterest, check out my article here: 11 hacks for massive Pinterest growth. At this point, I'm getting at least 35,000 clicks/month to my site from Pinterest and it also seems to be improving the SEO on many articles I've already written.
