Intro of a re-blog by Patricia Feager for SOME BODY on ActiveRain who everyone loves♥, admires, and respects, our very own AR member Barbara Todaro!

If you have been reading Barbara's blog posts for awhile, you will identify Barbara with a woman of strength, courage, and tenacity. During the month of January, she dedicated the month to our dearly beloved Lou Ludwig. She did a great job keeping Lou in our memory. This morning I read an article and I immediately thought of Barbara. In the re-blog, Barbara shows us what focus, setting goals, and determination can do for the human body. Barbara didn't always look like the photo in her blog. Like many people, she had to challenge herself, problem solve, and figure out a plan to get to where she is today. You might also be interested in reading what the article had to say about the brain and challenging yourself to solving existing problems:

Today's encore selection - from 'How To Save New Brain Cells' by Tracey J. Shors. The brain can grow new neurons, but these disappear unless cognitively challenged:

"Fresh neurons arise in the brain every day. ... Recent work, albeit mostly in rats, indicates that learning enhances the survival of new neurons in the adult brain. And the more engaging and challenging the problem, the greater the number of neurons that stick around. These neurons are then presumably available to aid in situations that tax the mind. It seems, then, that a mental workout can buff up the brain, much as physical exercise builds up the body. ..."

Good Health and Physical Fitness are the top challenges in 2018 for a very large sector of this country.  I think there are many on ActiveRain who are ready to get healthy, also.  Everyone’s clock is ticking.  Eating properly and exercising consistently will shed the pounds.  Weight training or resistance training will replace fat with lean muscle.  The result will be a shapely body with no excess fat and good definition.  The only fat anyone needs is around their organs.

Accomplishing good health begins in the kitchen. Adjust your daily menu. Begin with reducing your calorie intake to 1,200-1,400 calories/day for females.  Eliminate grain and dairy. Fresh fruit, fresh veggies and lean meat are ideal. Fat will come from 12 almonds a day. Drink water.  The rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water.

I weigh 130-135 pounds so I drink eight 8 ounce glasses a day. Join a gym that has resistance ropes, strength training machines and cables plus a track. Meet with a trainer for 3 sessions just to create a routine that you can work on every day and alternate the muscle groups.

Back and biceps one day; pecs and triceps another day: legs and glutes a third day; cardio a fourth day; abs another day; one day for resistance ropes (like Tom Brady uses)….one day off. Always work a large muscle group with a small muscle group.

HIRE A TRAINER FOR A FEW SESSIONS TO PREPARE A ROUTINE FOR YOU.  The YMCA has trainers. They get $50/hour. I’ve had a trainer for over 2 years. Now we do concentrated workouts. That means I work the same muscle group 3 days a week and increase the weights and/or the number of repetitions of each routine with every workout. I’m doing over 100 pounds on most machines. I do the stack (390 pounds) with my legs. The increases are 2.5 pounds at a time, and there are times that it takes weeks to do 10 reps with the higher weight.

Eventually you will be doing deadlifts with just the 45 pound bar and adding plates as you increase your training weights on the machines.  It’s a process.  It’s addictive. It’s energizing. It improves your self- confidence (especially since you’re working out in the “testosterone” section of the gym.)  There are men who are amazed when they see a woman lifting, pulling and pushing as much as they can do and sometimes more.  They’re always helpful, and they get to know you. You’ll become one of the regulars.

It is a great way to clear your head and focus on nothing but you.  It’s imperative to do that to avoid getting hurt. Strength training requires discipline and focus. You need to commit to doing it, and when you participate, you must focus.

Before I do a routine I picture the motions of good form in my head. Then I do the routine, and voila, I own it!!!!  Strength training will remove fat and replace it with lean muscle. It will change the shape of your body.  You won’t believe how happy you’ll be with the results.

This is my passion, and I just shared the basics with you. I hope it’s helpful. My daughter, Tammy, is being trained by me and is now a size 6 after 10 weeks of my routines. She feels like a new person, and she looks incredible. She also tells everyone who notices her new body that her mother kicks her ass in the gym!!!

Good luck in 2018 with your efforts….

Good morning, Patricia Feager thank you so much for the greatest compliment anyone could receive and that's a reblog on this platform.... I truly appreciate it.... my journey to good health began when I really hit bottom at 310 pounds....it was get healthy or die... I couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without my heart racing like a drum roll.... I feel like a new person but I'll never be able to forget those unhealthy days.... I actually find myself thinking about it everytime I sit in a chair and before I sit I think about the time when I didn't know if I'd fit... sad but true.... and I thank God for giving me the strength to get where I am...now I help and gently encourage others to join the ranks.... and flaunt the definition.... it's actually "hot" in the gym!!

Dear Barbara Todaro - Your comment and blog posts about health issues and women's problems is something so many women and men can identify with. By reading your blog posts on health and exercise, you make a valid point that very relevant to your health is your sense of self in relation to other people, and mostly to yourself. Without self-respect, you fizzle and feel defeated. Sitting in a movie theater or airplane may not even be an option for some. And then we wonder why our nation has so many depressed people? It seems as if everything is designed to fit slim people. Rather than wait for that to happen, you got off and running tto the gym and you hired a personal trainer. I know it wasn't easy. These are problems of long duration and results don't happen overnight. You have offered us over the past few years hope, understanding, and solutions to shared problems that not only can affect us, but our friends and loved ones too! You are truly honored and respected and I for one of thousands thank you!

I trained my daughter, Tammy, for 3 months and now she's a slim trim gal with defined muscles.... she dropped 3 dress sizes.... and now she's addicted to the gym.... I was with her every day and now I go with her once a week to add some new routines to keep her challenged....

thank you so much for your kind words, Patricia Feager ... you don't know how much I appreciate that...

Joe Pryor I love doing many static poses from yoga.... every muscle in the body is engaged... I can hold a static pose for 4 minutes 15 seconds, timed..... on back with legs out straight and elevated 6" off floor and arms stretched out to the side.... no movement....just a static pose.

Patricia I met Barbara before her transformation, and as focused as she was then, it pales to the focus and determination she has now.
